Emily-Fay Lunn

Emily-Fay Lunn – Editor

Keen-eyed editor with 15+ years of experience and a passion for sci-fi, fantasy and crime fiction. Let me obsess over the little details!

Overview

Hi! My name is Emily and I have 15+ years of professional editing experience, including nearly 10 years spent in-house as part of the Gollancz editorial team, one of the UK’s leading SFF publishers. I’m happy to tackle hard SF, epic fantasy and all the fun stuff in between, plus crime, thrillers and mysteries.

When editing, I love to get stuck into the nitty-gritty details of everything, from the overarching world-building, characterisation and plot timeline to the specific placement and movement of physical objects and people from scene to scene.

My goal as your editor is to ensure that, even in a fantastical or futuristic setting, everything is logical, consistent and clear so that the reading experience is as smooth and immersive as possible. I’m not afraid to get my hands dirty with research so I can engage more knowledgeably with your manuscript and suggest appropriate changes regardless of genre, whether that involves fact-checking the science and technical terminology or deep-diving into the logistics of medieval blacksmithing (true story!). I will help iron out awkward phrasing, unclear meaning and clarify on-page action as delicately as possible while remaining sensitive to your authorial voice.

Oh, and I have very strong feelings about technical accuracy, so be ready for me to get freaky with your esoteric language usage and punctuation…

Let me overthink your manuscript with you; together we can make it something magnificent!

”Emily is an experienced and reliable editor, who has done fantastic work for Gollancz and the SF Gateway. I am always confident sending books to her as I know she will be fastidious and the edits will be high quality” - Claire Ormsby-Potter, editor (Gollancz)

“Working with Emily is always a dream. She is incredibly reliable, bringing a keen eye for detail across the multiple SFF genres she works on. From new-guard romantasy by the likes of Rachel Schneider, SF Masterworks or even the odd Brandon Sanderson project, she is incredibly diligent in her work, raising editorial queries in a professional and useful way. I would highly recommend Emily’s editorial services!” - Millie Prestidge, assistant editor (Gollancz and Orion Fiction)
