'Working with Liz feels like being rescued for a first-time author. With her insider knowledge of book publishing, she's not only an amazing resource and guide to navigating the bewildering and overwhelming task of book promotion and marketing, but she's also a tremendous comfort.' –Huda Al-Marashi, author of First Comes Marriage
Projects ranged from books by celebrities such as Amy Schumer, Derek Jeter, and Tiffany Haddish to building the fiction careers of authors including Ruth Ware, Lisa Genova, and Iain Reid. Oversaw advertising planning and execution, and strategized social media content, scheduling, and advertising. Expanded an in-house vertical from a blog to include a branded podcast, YouTube channel, online fan convention, and brand ambassador team. Coordinated special events and brand activations; initiated and directed out-of-house partnerships.
Marketed 800 to 1,000 books annually for several company divisions, many of them New York Times bestsellers. Authors and books ranged from Ron Chernow (Alexander Hamilton, the inspiration for the Broadway show Hamilton) to Khaled Hosseini (The Kite Runner) to Tom Clancy to Charlaine Harris (Sookie Stackhouse series, the basis for HBO’s True Blood) to Patrick Rothfuss (The Kingkiller Chronicle series, currently being adapted by Lionsgate). Responsible for advertising planning for industry and consumer audiences, promotional materials for bookstores and consumers, social media identity creation across several channels, convention coordination, and video production.
Projects included writing back cover copy and retailer product descriptions; suggesting BISAC codes and Amazon keywords; writing author bios of various lengths; preparing an author Q-and-A, text for a press kit, and shareable images for social (designed by another talented Reedsy professional); establishing a NetGalley account and associated promotions, and brainstorming speaking engagement topics for the author as well as article/op-ed ideas. I also successfully pitched a few of the author's articles for media pick-up, and continue to perform outreach for in-person appearances, already resulting in a confirmed engagement.
For this self-published trilogy, I conducted a review and prepared suggested revisions for the books’ product copy, author bio text, and keywords on retailer sites. I advised on the author's professional Facebook page's elements and posts, and consulted on the content and design of the author’s website. Additionally, I worked with Goodreads to have the trilogy correctly listed and updated on that community site, and prepared best practices and activities for the author related to building his presence there, including a giveaway. We also discussed opportunities with BookBub and review-building strategies.
Projects with this author have ranged from research, outreach and follow-up with medical and holistic experts (resulting in book blurbs, recommendations, and postings) to conference, speaking engagement, and partner research and media pitching, including podcasts, online, and print.
For Amy Schumer’s #1 New York Times bestselling humor essay collection, I oversaw a huge variety of promotional efforts (e.g., sweepstakes, temporary tattoos, photo ops, national advertising, custom videos for retailers, radio promotions, and more). We also conceived of a few interactive, fan-engagement custom website experiences for the book. I worked with a partner company, Southern Made, to build this out, and ran the creative, liaison, and approvals process on my side. One of the sites we built together generated the user’s own fake memoir title, complete with a 3-D book cover image, in the style of Amy’s book. The site created custom image assets that the user could then share on their own social media platforms, which also featured Amy’s book, in essence pairing the user’s imaginary memoir with Amy’s on a virtual bookshelf. This was a fun interactive promotional piece in the spirit of the book. We coordinated with Amy's social team and webmaster to ensure a coordinated release of this interactive site.
For this debut memoir, I consulted with the author regarding her goals for promotion the book, and we talked through certain items she should request of her publisher and when, how to best distribute advance reading copies of her book, and best practices for her social media platforms. I prepared social media posting content ideas, wrote a reading group guide/discussion questions, guided her through setting up her Goodreads profile, and reviewed press materials at her request. I also conducted a targeted influencer outreach campaign (identifying targets and pitching her book to them) and prepared advertising copy and target lists for an extensive Facebook advertising campaign.
