Brian Buckley

Brian Buckley – Editor

Friendly, flexible, thorough copy editor/proofreader. I've edited books for everyone from self-published novelists to MIT Press.

Overview

I've been a freelance copy editor and proofreader since 2016. Past clients include MIT Press, O'Reilly, and Pearson, as well as a CPA firm, small publishers, a children's book author, and dozens of others. I've handled books, magazine articles, blog posts, academic papers, presentation slides, and everything in between.

I edit fiction and nonfiction, all subjects and genres.

What can I, as a copy editor, do for you?

Once you've finished major revisions, I'll give your manuscript that final layer of polish that will make it easier to read and more professional looking. I'll clean up grammar, spelling, punctuation, word choice, consistency, and style. Things like:
Are you using "discreet" vs. "discrete" correctly?
Are names spelled consistently throughout your work?
Do you have any sentences that are unclear, and how can we clarify them?
That way, your readers won't be distracted by such things, and they can focus on what matters: your writing.

Before I edit a single word, I'll take the time to listen carefully to what you need. I'll make sure I understand your goals, your voice, and your style. Once I start, I'll keep in touch with you throughout the edit, asking questions when I need clarification. And I'll track all changes I make, so you can easily see everything I've done (and you can always choose which changes you want to accept).

At the end, you'll have a clean, highly polished document, with all my edits and suggestions clearly marked. And if you have any questions, I'm happy to discuss them.

Perhaps most importantly: I don't bite. You can always count on me to be respectful and kind, no matter what.

Together, we'll make your writing the best it can be!

Client testimonials:

“Brian is my go-to copyeditor and proofreader. Not only is he pleasant and professional to work with, but his thoughtfulness and skill as an editor mean that I can deliver concise, compelling content on a timely basis to my clients--which makes me look good! If you're looking for an outstanding copyeditor or proofreader, hire Brian.”
—Laura Sparks, Founder, Creative Sparks LLC

“Brian not only provided valuable edits, he also provided an explanation as to why each edit had been suggested. He corrected grammatical errors, suggested options for more appropriate word choices and sentence structures, and was amazing to ensure the names, credentials, and titles were accurate and consistent throughout the document. His service is timely, interactive, and simply top notch. I am now confident that my work is ready to be published.”
—Carol Wulff, children’s book author

“Brian just completed a short-term assignment for our magazine and did an outstanding job. He was thorough, precise, and professional, and caught some critical errors that others had not. Brian delivered every assignment on time or earlier and was willing to take on extra assignments when asked. He has a cooperative and collegial personality and was a true pleasure to work with. I would strongly recommend Brian for any copyediting assignments.”
