Overview
Hi there, I'm Ben.
I'm an experienced non-fiction, illustrated, and literary editor and consultant with 10+ years in the publishing industry, who specialises in shaping intelligent, beautifully crafted books that combine a unique voice or idea with commercial appeal.
My tastes are varied, but I am particularly drawn to narrative non-fiction, cookery, natural history, cultural criticism, literary fiction, including short story and essay collections, as well as works that straddle genres.
I’ve commissioned and edited multiple Sunday Times bestsellers; developed high-spec illustrated titles for authors and brands such as Yotam Ottolenghi, Mary Berry, Doctor Who, and Sir David Attenborough; and I have a thorough understanding of the entire publishing process, which means I can help you no matter what stage of the process you are at.
Drawing on my experience at HarperCollins, Bloomsbury, Hachette, and Penguin Random House – as well as my background as a bookseller and long-standing freelance consultant – I understand what the industry is looking for.
I'm especially interested in books that explore ideas — whether through story, structure, or visual form — and I love working with writers who are genuinely passionate about their craft. My editorial approach is honest, collaborative, and strategic: I want the best for your book.
So, whether you’re developing a memoir, essay collection, cultural history, literary novel, or illustrated concept, I can help refine the structure, sharpen the storytelling, and build your confidence as we unlock your creative and commercial potential together.
I look forward to working with you.
