Abigail Nathan

Abigail Nathan – Editor

I'm a genre-fiction specialist, mentor, editor and literary agent with over 20 years' experience helping authors get their stories written.

Overview

I have worked in publishing since 2001. I started freelancing in 2004 and have edited for various Australian publishers including Allen & Unwin, HarperCollins, Penguin Random House, Harlequin, and Simon & Schuster, as well as UK publishers including Angry Robot, Hachette and Gollancz. In 2023 I also began working as a literary agent.

I edit what I love to read, which tends to be anything that gets classified as “genre” – fantasy, scifi, romance, crime, and anything in between. I get absorbed in the manuscripts I work on and love to engage as both a reader and an editor.

My goal is always to help the author get whatever is in their head onto the page. This means getting to know their characters and worlds, and becoming a kind of editorial chameleon to ensure that any changes or tweaks I’m suggesting are in keeping with the author – and characters’ – voices. I prefer to provide suggestions and explanations over simply making changes to a manuscript. I aim to help authors become better writers and self-editors during their work with me.

Work experience

Self-employed

Aug, 2004 — Present
As a freelancer since 2004, I have edited for Australian publishers including HarperCollins, Penguin Random House, Harlequin, Simon and Schuster, Allen and Unwin, and Hachette, as well as UK publishers including Angry Robot, Hachette and Gollancz. I also work regularly with emerging and self-publishing writers. My work with publishers has been on commercial fiction and non-fiction for adults, young adults and children, specialising particularly in genre – including speculative fiction, crime, romance and erotica – for authors such as Karly Lane, Tea Cooper, R.A. Spratt, Alastair Reynolds, Louise Carey and many others. While my traditional publishing work has included everything from developmental and structural editing through to line and copy editing and proofreading, my independent work with authors is often deeper and more collaborative: manuscript assessments and developmental, structural and content editing. (This is what prompted my expansion into mentoring and coaching.)

Self-employed

Jun, 2020 — Present
As a book coach my aim is to help authors meet a specific goal. This may be to complete a novel for self-publishing; get a manuscript ready for submissions to agents and publishers; write a short story or master a particular writing skill; prepare for a competition or meet a publication deadline…it could be anything! Although we may work on craft and process, coaching is more about accountability and keeping an author on track to hit their goal.

Self-employed

Oct, 2017 — Present
Teaching writers the skills and confidence to develop their work and figure out their individual writing process. This can involve goal-setting and may focus on a specific project or manuscript, but it is primarily about craft development and the internal process of story writing and understanding what writing and being an author means and looks like for that individual. I work as a mentor privately, but also with organisations such as Writing NSW and Queensland Writers Centre.

Fantastic to work with, gave clear feedback that was easy to understand, provided invaluable insight when asked, provided updates in a timely manner even when sick (not that I asked her to work when sick). Her edits truly elevated my work to levels I did not think possible. Highly recommended.
