Erin Williams

Erin Williams – Editor

Copy editor of health and fitness books, with experience handling exercise plans, recipes, and memoirs.

Overview

I'm a copy editor and proofreader with book publishing and newspaper experience. In addition to copyediting and editing, I've done project management for books, keeping all the little parts moving for deadlines near and far. I've also been a layout designer, so I've got an eye for spacing and design issues. I can help you with all the little things that make the difference between so-so and great.

I'm also a mom of two, a runner of short but growing distances, and a coffee lover. I attempt to garden, cook, and bake. I'm lucky that I've had a career where I can read about all the above and keep learning!

Work experience

Self-employed

Oct, 2015 — Present

Copyediting services for publications from books to websites, with AP or Chicago style followed, depending on your needs. No-ego editing. I take seriously the idea of being the first real reader of your work, and I ask the questions that need to be asked for the clear expression of your ideas.

Rodale Books

Oct, 2009 — Oct, 2014 (about 5 years)

Guided a dozen trade titles each year from manuscript to release date including branded books, ebooks,
and DVDs for Men’s Health, Women’s Health, Runner’s World, and Bicycling magazines.
• SCHEDULE MANAGEMENT: Rigorous, clear communication and proactive problem-solving brought consistent on-time success despite extremely tight schedules and many moving pieces for bestselling Eat This, Not That! book series as well as other rush products.
• TEAM BUILDER: Hired and managed freelance copy editors and fact checkers. Worked with designers and editors to troubleshoot manuscript issues, route materials for review, and keep projects on schedule.
• CONTENT MANAGEMENT: Styled electronic manuscripts and tracked files through editing process.
• COPYEDITING AND PROOFREADING: Combined edits from multiple parties and checked revised proofs; signed off on printer proofs of interiors, covers, and jackets; and copyedited materials for marketing and advertising of assigned products. Handled cold reads for many projects. Markup done in both hard-copy and electronic forms. Reviewed ebooks for in-house developers; made edits directly in electronic files.

The Patriot Ledger

Oct, 2007 — May, 2009 (over 1 year)

Planned, assigned, and edited content of weekly sections covering home, family, religion, travel, health, and food. Edited columns by Wayne Westcott on fitness, Susan Martinez Standring on spirituality, and Julie Fay on family (all local columnists who were syndicated through Gatehouse Media). Also handled several special sections each year.

The Patriot Ledger (Quincy, Massachusetts), The Enterprise (Brockton, Massachusetts), Daily Southtown (Tinley Park, Illinois)

Nov, 2001 — Oct, 2007 (almost 6 years)

Daily and hourly deadlines helped develop time management and organization skills. Designed and copyedited local, wire, business, and features pages, filling in as front-page designer as needed. Wrote headlines and subheads to fit designer's specifications.
