Kate Caraballo

Kate Caraballo – Editor

Copyeditor/proofreader 6+ years. Works with first-time authors, professors, and small Catholic presses. Passionate about poetry and drama.

Overview

I began working as an editor at Belmont Abbey College, specializing in our community-wide literary journal, Agora. Interdepartmental needs drew out more of my interest in editing services. I was employed on various projects, from typesetting (Middle Earth and the Return to the Common Good by Joshua Hren) to proofreading (poetry by Dr. Mary Ellen Weir) to developmental editing (Dr. Grattan Brown's "'Medical Futility': Help or Hobgoblin in End-of-Life Discussions"). At the end of my college career, Wiseblood Books hired me as an intern, which eventually blossomed into a more permanent position as a freelance copyeditor and proofreader for the small, yet booming press. With my foot in the door, I have expanded my work into other small, up-in-coming presses, catching other exciting side projects in my ever-growing net. Over the last five years, some of those projects include developmentally editing and producing a new musical, The Smile of Grace, which debuted in the summer of 2021; revamping and copyediting promotional material, recruitment copy, and pamphlets for Good Will Publishers; collaborating with first-time authors on fiction novels (Follow the Devil / Follow the Light by Jeremiah Webster; The Walk by Glenn Weaver) and personal projects (Fire on the Drift by Annie Owens); co-creating, writing, and editing a new blog series and podcast for Holy Heroes; and working with Sophia Institute Press as a freelance copyeditor for Catholic accounts on virtuous living and trips to Lourdes, France.

Although I have worked most often with fiction novels, my expert eye reaches further into the work of playwrights, poets, short story writers, and cultural critics. Every writer has a unique style. My job is both to honor and improve upon that style. I am dedicated to assisting an author's artistry in reaching its full potential.
