Alice Waugh

Alice Waugh – Editor

Copy and content editor of fiction and non-fiction, specialising in Middle Eastern and East Asian cultures and international politics.

Overview

I am an expert proofreader, copy editor and content editor with over thirteen years’ experience working on trade fiction and non-fiction books, corporate websites and literature, art books and academic dissertations. I have worked on titles across a wide range of subjects, from Middle Eastern political and religious movements via the stock market to some fascinating memoirs. More recently, I have focused on corporate websites, reports and literature, researching and editing all company literature for Walk Japan, a company offering bespoke walking tours of Japan, and editing company newsletters for AKO Capital. I have also worked on several art catalogues, photography and art books, including captioning and short essays.

I work in British or American English, using Cambridge, Oxford, APA or Chicago styles as appropriate and working strictly according to house style, in some cases setting house style. My written and spoken French and Spanish are fluent; I translate long articles from French or Spanish to English, and have worked between translated texts and the original texts in French and Spanish as a copy and content editor.

My love of the English language and passion for ferreting out the smallest errors in punctuation, syntax and referencing could be called obsessive; I think it fits me perfectly for this work! The opportunity to continue learning and researching new areas of study is another reason I love being an editor; few careers demand such breadth of knowledge or offer such potential for exploration.

In addition to proofreading, I offer both development and copy editing services. As a development editor, I will read your manuscript and offer a general overview before delving into suggestions for restructuring, highlighting where your plot or argument needs bolstering, and where you might need to make cuts. As a copy editor, I have a strong focus on style and consistency and will also help you to restructure paragraphs or chapters if that is something you seek. I look forward to working with you on your book and delving into your area of expertise.
