I have been editing documents, both fiction and non-fiction, since 2001, including scientific papers, essays, and novels. I provide story coaching and developmental editing as well as proofreading and copy editing services. My primary focus is fiction for children, middle grade, and young adults in any genre. I am also interested in mysteries and romances for adult audiences.

I used to say you would never buy a car without test driving it first, until I met a woman who did just that and regretted her choice. In the same manner, I would not expect an author to hire an editor without a test drive. You want to make sure your editor is a good match for you.

Upon receiving your manuscript, I will beta read the entire document, providing you with an evaluation that discusses character and plot development, pointing out areas where I think more or less information needs to be provided. I will also sample edit approximately 1000 words so you can get a feel of my style. This beta read and sample edit is completely FREE.

Upon receipt of your signed contract and a small deposit ($50-100, depending on manuscript size), you will receive a link where you can monitor my progress, including an estimated start and completion date.

My comprehensive editing process involves reading through your manuscript several times, including at least one pass on paper. My main areas of focus are the reduction of dialogue tags and passive voice, though I will also offer suggestions to reduce repetitive words, inconsistencies in tense and/or point of view, and other common errors. After a final proofreading pass, I return the manuscript, along with a color-coded mockup of your book. This sample highlights action, backstory, internals, dialogue, internals, and setting. If a page looks to be inundated with one color, I offer suggestions on how to create a better balance. After you have reviewed my suggestions, accepting or rejecting them as you wish, I will again review the document. We can pass it back and forth as many times as necessary until we are both 100% satisfied with the results.

I charge $30 an hour for my services, not to exceed a maximum of $0.03 per word. Subsequent proofreading is provided at no charge as outlined in your contract.
