Shane Larney

Shane Larney – Editor

A freelance academic and journal editor; my major clients include The Lancet, ibidem, and Routledge

Overview

An Irish editor living in Germany, I stay closely connected with local academics and artists.

I specialise in preparing books and articles for publication, and as a habit create an individualised workflow for the style guide of any given publishing house or journal.

Semantic clarity and grammatical accuracy are my key areas of focus, and with my background as an English teacher and as an academic reader, I highlight and correct errors, offer frequent suggestions for alternative approaches to sentences, and provide explanatory comments as to where things went wrong.

I work across fields, and include both creative fiction and professional academic material in my editing repertoire. I have worked on books on the subject of: political science, international relations, and China studies; and on PhD theses on: linguistics, anthropology, pedagogy, policy analysis, European law, medicine, and much more.

My experience extends to working in-house for journals themselves; I am keenly aware of their workflows and the universal requirements of academic writing to be fit for publication.

As for students, while it’s true that I technically cannot give guarantees, I'm happy to say that no student has ever failed on a piece I assisted with.

I work often with APA, Chicago, and MLA styles, but have a diverse portfolio and can adjust to other styles.
