Overview
I have particular subject matter experience in (and a fondness for!) political science and anthropology, and I'm a proficient fact checker and researcher in these disciplines. I also have broad knowledge of trends in the first-year composition market, ed tech, and open educational resources. While I love editing in the social sciences, I'm open to working on all sorts of nonfiction projects; I find that learning about something new as I read helps me be an even more engaged, attentive editor, ready to point out language infelicities or inconsistencies that may cloud your message.
I love working with authors to distill complex topics into cogent, memorable prose, and I enjoy collaborating to enliven academic writing through connections with current events. I have an ear for animating wooden, repetitive, or ambiguous writing and an eye for spotting errors in the crevices of your work. I'm also proficient in APA and Chicago style, and I (weirdly, probably) love to clean up reference lists.
Testimonials
"Sam, you are doing a great job with the editing. Not only in terms of your word-smithing, which greatly improves the quality and clarity of the prose, but also on the substance. Thanks for your great work!" —David Canon, Professor of Political Science, University of Wisconsin–Madison
"Your practice as an editor is, line by line, to make my writing better. It's such a privilege." —Brian Goedde, Assistant Professor of English, Community College of Philadelphia
"It's been so reassuring seeing the eagle-eyed comments you've brought to the slide decks. Thank you a thousand times for getting these into proper shape to go out in the world!" —Danny Fuerstman, State College of Florida, Manatee-Sarasota
