Overview

I’m a freelance indexer, line and copyeditor, and proofreader. A former professor of (medieval) history, I specialize in nonfiction and academic humanities and social sciences. In addition to working directly with authors on their books (such as Stuart McManus's "Jesuit World Philology and the Birth of Comparative Grammar") I copyedit and proofread the Bulletin for the Indexing Society of Canada and copyedit for H-France.

I specialize in scholarly embedded and back-of-book indexing in the humanities and social sciences, as well as materials relating to role-playing games and scholarly-adjacent trade non-fiction. I do traditional back-of-book and embedded indexing. My rates are competitive with the industry standard, generally ranging between $4 and $6 per page.

TESTIMONIALS

Jolanta is an excellent copy-editor (in multiple languages) and indexer. A consummate professional with a keen eye for detail. Very transparent and easy to work with. Highly recommended for top-end academic work.
-- Stuart M. McManus, FRAS, Assistant Professor of History, The Chinese University of Hong Kong

Jolanta did excellent and amazing work for me on Health Communication and Sport. Her work was punctual and I really appreciated that she was familiar with what the publisher needed and even caught some things I missed! I highly recommend Jolanta! She will be the only person I use for book projects moving forward!

--Jimmy Sanderson, Associate Professor, Texas Tech University

I have trusted Jolanta to index two large multiauthor volumes for Cambridge University press. Both projects involved contributions from a variety of disciplines and the terminological challenge this can entail. Jolanta has the perceptive eye for detail that these projected requires. Both indices were produced on time, and allowed the publication process to proceed seamlessly. I recommend her to anyone in the humanities.’

-- Alexander J.B. Hampton, Assistant Professor, Department for the Study of Religion, University of Toronto

Dr. Jolanta is exceedingly proficient, professional, and a real pleasure to work with. She created an excellent index on short notice, insightfully and expertly pulling together important strands of the work. Highly recommend Close Reading Indexing and Editing!

-- Claire Raymond, PhD, author of The Selfie, Temporality, and Contemporary Photography

Working with Close Reading Indexing and Editing was a fantastic experience in every aspect. Dr. Jolanta indexing work on my manuscript was fast, thorough, and came with clear explanations of how to evaluate the index and how embedding worked. Her sharp editing eye also caught typos and other errors that had passed my notice and that of the press editors and reviewers. Put simply, working with Close Reading at the late state of the manuscript process made my book a better book.

-- Joseph Clark, Assistant Professor of History, University of Kentucky
