Recommendations

When I wrote my first book, Night Madness – A Rear Gunner’s Story of Love, Courage, and Hope in WWII, which was ultimately published in October 2012 I had the privilege of working directly with Richard D., the publisher of Red Deer Press. Richard offered to personally take on the task of working with me, as a first time author, to provide editorial guidance with respect to the book’s structure as well as copy editing. It would be an understatement to say that with Richard’s guidance , patience and input, my initial draft was transformed into a compelling and readable story. Richard’s greatest contributions were in the structure of the book. This included insightful recommendations to add first-hand accounts on-the-ground from a German perspective on the bombing of Dresden, as well as prefacing the part of my story on my Dad’s experience with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) with an introductory chapter to address the nature of PTSD in terms of incidence and treatments. I will be forever grateful for Richard’s guidance, support and technical expertise which launched me on a career as a writer.

-- Richard R. Pyves, author of Night Madness and Courage, Sacrifice and Betrayal

We have worked with Richard on four published books. Whether Richard was working with us in his capacity as editor or helping us as a guide, he has always been a pleasure to work with. Richard makes manuscripts better, not by being an intrusive editor, but by working with the author to make her words and work better. Richard is easy to work with, friendly, respectful and reliable. We would happily work with Richard any time and confidently recommend him to others.

Richard has been a fantastic editor. When we did the developmental edit he gave me a precise roadmap to organize the ideas and themes of my story into a coherent narrative, and when he did the copyedit he helped me make the writing more concise and add clarity, as well as helping pick up any loose ends left.

Richard's work, focusing on the flow, repeats and anything else that slows down, he suggested deleting. It made a huge improvement. Although this memoir is still on the long side, it's now more compact. I shed over 15,000 words. His editing turned these paragraphs readable, it even made it clear for me to read on. I had deeply disappointing experience with Kirkus pro-editorial package I signe...

Richard performed a developmental edit for a journey I took on my kayak around Vancouver Island. Throughout my manuscript he has given valuable insights on how to organize the flow of the story, and tie together the themes and ideas I explore in the journey. He also gave me several pointers on events in the story which I can use to develop the characters, enrich descriptions of the scenery, and...
