Overview
Hi, I’m Raya! I bring over 14 years of editorial experience to the table—from my early days in Toronto music journalism to my current freelance work with publishing houses like Nimbus and indie authors around the world. My specialties include literary fiction, YA, fantasy, poetry, and non-fiction that leans into the occult, history, or local culture. I’m also proud to be part of the first wave of editors at Storywise Studio (Lauren Kay Writes).
My background in music journalism means I have a soft spot for books about music, culture, and artists. If you're writing about those worlds, I’m already listening. I also run the literary journal Blood & Bourbon, where I get to play with the deliciously strange and lyrical. On the corporate side, I’ve worked as a copywriter and proofreader for brands like TD, Keilhauer, and Kensington Tours.
When we work together, I’m your champion. I protect your voice like a treasure chest while also diving deep to sharpen your prose, shape your sentences, and tackle the grammar gremlins. Whether you need a copy edit, line edit, or both, I’ll help you bring out the strongest, most resonant version of your work.
I offer a free 15-minute consultation so we can talk about your goals, your project, and how I can support you—whether you need one service or someone to walk the full journey with you.
I am currently working on a developmental editing certification from Fictionary and can't wait to share this knowledge with my authors!
Testimonials:
"Raya was always clear – and that means a lot when you're working with words. She understood my writing style, and kept it intact through the editing process. She was responsive to my feedback, and never tried to shape me into something I’m not. If I had my pick of editors, I'd choose her every time!" -- Steve Skafte, The Dead Die Twice
"I enjoyed working with Raya as an editor. Her suggestions seemed well thought-out and were backed with good reasoning. She really listened to any concerns I had with proposed changes, and we had lots of interactive dialogue to work through difficult portions of text. Overall, I really like her collaborative editing style; she supported my work and accentuated my voice. Given the opportunity, I would definitely work with her again.” -- Lina Marques, author
