Katherine Kirk

Katherine Kirk – Editor

I work on SFF, cozy crime, and romance, with a sentence-level focus on keeping readers immersed in your story, told in your voice.

Overview

Hello, I’m Katherine. As an Advanced Professional Member of the CIEP, my skills and experience have been tested, attested to, and verified by a panel of my peers, and I am held to demonstrate a high level of professional competence and substantial experience. I also hold a Bachelors of English Literature and Philosophy, and a PGCE in Teaching English. Before I was an editor, I was a teacher in international schools in South Korea, Ecuador, and China. Now my husband, my cats, and I have settled in Morocco, which is in a great time zone for working with authors in the UK, Europe, and USA!

I help authors to clear the errors from your prose so that your message is clear of ambiguity and your books exceed your readers' expectations. I can help you to make your writing read as well on the page as it does in your mind by removing the stumbling blocks that trip up your readers at any level, from story to semicolons. My friendly, personal approach gives you much more than better writing; I provide a human touch that is impossible to achieve through spell-checking software, and I never use Generative AI.

My goal is to be the bridge between author and reader so that your readers can enjoy the story the way you intended them to. The rules in fiction are infinitely flexible, and I'll help you bend them as far as you want to without getting tangled up in them.

I work with anyone who has a great story to tell, whether it's your first book or you're an NYT Bestselling author. I especially love character-driven stories, and I thoroughly enjoy an unlikable or unreliable narrator. I'm not easily offended, and I have a high tolerance for spice. My experiences living in China, South Korea, Mauritius, South Africa, and Ecuador can be handy for manuscripts about those settings, as well as giving me a firm grip on the nuances between British and American English.

I look forward to hearing from you!

Self-employed

I help authors tweak their sentences and herd their commas.
• Building style consistency over extended series, be it YA Dystopia, Romantasy, or a Space Opera.
• Working with first-time self-publishing authors to make their final product feel as shiny and professional as a traditionally published book, and with experienced NYT Bestsellers to make sure their readers' high standards are consistently exceeded in new work.
• Freelancing with publishers and editorial agencies, applying a variety of specific house styles within tight deadlines.
