Rachael Souza

Rachael Souza – Editor

Enthusiastic and Proficient Editor and Writer with the experience to develop a variety of titles for publication

Overview

I am an experience editor who has worked in the publishing industry for several years. Throughout my time working in publishing I have excelled at every aspect of my job. My daily tasks include author management, in which I aid authors in everything from achieving deadlines to providing developmental edits to improve their manuscript. In my current position I have proofread and copy edited manuscripts to make them printer ready.

In addition to my professional experience, I also have my MFA in Creative Writing. The director of the program is Ann Hood, who is well-known for her bestselling fiction and nonfiction books, such as The Knitting Club. This degree has honed my writing, editing, and analytical skills through the week-long residences. Through this program I have connected with publishers from top companies, such as Penguin Random House and HarperCollins. I have also networked with agents who represent New York Times bestselling authors. These connections are invaluable and have informed my writing and editing.

I have also done my own writing which has been mostly nonfiction with a focus on living with a physical disability, though I do write fiction as well. My work has been featured on sites such as The EveryGirl.

I have the skills needed to help writers develop and edit their manuscripts so they may be published at a high quality. My industry knowledge has also given me an advantage to understanding the market and what makes a book successful. I am grateful to have the opportunity to use my passion for reading and writing to help my fellow writers produce their work.

I have taken on a leadership role within the editorial support team, conducting multiple trainings with new hires and working as a mentor for those on my team. I complete manuscript and proposal reviews by contacting and following-up with reviewers, compiling responses, and analyzing feedback. I also attend conferences to meet with potential buyers and explore opportunities for expanding our list.
