Overview

I’m an experienced and award-winning academic editor based in New Zealand. Although most of my book work has been in medical education, I have also recently been supporting academic clients in social sciences with writing work. I read widely in politics, international development and modern history and have principles of book development that work for any topic.

My mission is to help academics and non-fiction authors in medicine, science and social science organize their writing, increase their productivity, creativity and enthusiasm, and get it done.

I'm particularly interested in activist-academic and global justice and equality projects, as well as projects with an ambitious use of educational technology or graphics. One of my favorite projects involved developing hundreds of comic illustrations conveying patient experiences for a comprehensive series of medical textbooks.

If English is a second language for you – or even a first! – I will help you reach a crystal-clear, international standard of English. I pride myself on making even complex topics clear and readable to a wide audience.

From one-off content assessments and copy-edits to editorial management, coaching and full self-publishing project management, I’d love to hear from you.

"Paul has been assisting me for almost a year now, and he is a life-saver. I am an academic with little time, too many ideas and projects, and distractible mind even without outside stimuli. Paul is patient, friendly, fun to work with, and a serious and meticulous task-master. Based on seeing his prior work, I thought he would be helpful in corralling my often unfocused energy so that I can get small research projects, peer-review articles, and book proposals completed. I was right. Because of him, I feel less like I’m running in circles in the dark, and am completing projects."

Dr. Josh R. Klein, Associate Professor of Sociology, Iona College, New York, USA

"I have worked with Paul on the planning and development of two medical textbooks, as well as editorial work on an entire series of such books. Throughout I have been very impressed by his ability to combine his medical background with a keen appreciation of the needs of the prospective audience. I always valued his input, and the books are very much better as a result. I can highly recommend working with Paul."

Prof. David Oliveira, St Georges University of London, UK

"Working with Paul was an absolute pleasure. His expertise as an editor helped the team develop as authors and enabled us to turn a stream of consciousness into an engaging and accessible textbook."

Dr Dawn R. Collins, Associate Professor of Neuroscience, Warwick Medical School, UK

"I have enjoyed working with Paul on two innovative Neurology textbooks and have found him committed, responsive, organized and insightful. I can highly recommend working with him to complete challenging content projects, not only to steer them to completion, but to make them uniquely engaging and high-quality resources."

Dr John Goodfellow, Consultant Neurologist, Glasgow, UK

"Paul is a skilled, sensitive and intelligent editor. He is a pleasure to work with. I give him my highest recommendation."

Dr Asoka Bandarage, Associate Professor (Social Sciences) and journalist, Sri Lanka

"As soon as I was asked to set up the publishing program for JP Medical in 2009, I knew I wanted Paul to join me as Development Editor. The insight he was able to bring to publishing content for medical students and junior doctors explains in large part why the titles we went on publish (Pocket Tutor, Eureka) have gone on to garner rave reviews and be translated into multiple languages. Paul is hugely creative, analytical and able to work independently."

Paul did developmental editing for me on a medical school book. I really liked the way he approached our project: he set up a meeting with me to discuss my vision, share ideas, ask questions, etc., then edited the manuscript in two separate periods. He made a lot of great suggestions that I incorporated into the final copy, like text box ideas, tables/figures, hyperlinks, etc. Paul was knowled...

I have thoroughly enjoyed working with Paul. He has provided extremely valuable feedback regarding our book, given us great ideas regarding what to add to the book, helped with editing and undoubtedly improving the quality of this book. He has been extremely punctual, met all deadlines, and exceeded all expectations. I do not think we would have been able to move towards publication without ...
