Dominic Farrell

Dominic Farrell – Editor

15+ years' experience editing fiction (lit and mysteries), non-fiction (history, poli sci, bios, memoirs, finance, art), reports, web copy.

Overview

I have edited more than 100 titles, including bestsellers, award winners, and award nominees, in a variety of genres. Fiction, mysteries, history, political science, current events, memoirs, bios, personal finance, art, sports — I've edited all of them. While providing clear and honest advice about how to improve a ms., I am careful to always respect the author's voice and vision. Over the years, numerous authors have offered me particular thanks for my patience and for the respect I have shown to them and their works.

I have considerable experience reviewing manuscripts being considered for acquisition by publishers. I have also worked with independent authors to help them prepare their manuscripts for submission to a publisher or an agent. Sometimes a manuscript isn't quite ready — work still needs to be done on the draft. I can help with that.

I've also worked as an editor in the world outside of book publishing. Most recently, I edited the strategic report, operational manual, and annual report for a major hospital. I have edited previous annual reports for the hospital, too, as well as funding proposals and almost all of the material appearing on the hospital's website also.

If you have a manuscript or a report or some web copy that needs editing, or if you have something that you just want an educated opinion about, I can help.

Author Reviews

“Dominic is an expert and tactful editor. He respects the author's vision and talent. He's diligent and thorough in spotting what needs to be corrected, what needs expansion, and what should be more concise. Editing my novel, he had the insight to recommend a restructuring that enabled me to find the way of making the novel more profound and also appeal to a wider audience. I admire his editing abilities and recommend him highly.” — Dorris Heffron, author of City Wolves

“I heartily recommend Dominic. He is an astute and balanced editor, well versed in public affairs, and with a collegial, constructive working style.” — Dennis McConaghy, author of Breakdown: The Pipeline Debate and the Threat to Canada’s Future

“Dominic had the most difficult author to work with, ME! Difficult since I was a new, old writer, walking in with 75,000 words on his late son, still grieving, still thinking every word written was sacred, and that any deletion was personal. I had the distinct pleasure, later in life but early in an author career, to do a significant edit with Dominic. He's a brilliant wordsmith, and he's sensitive, patient — a teacher and more. My book is so improved by his precise work, always respecting the words, the author, and the story. He's set a high benchmark.” — Rick Prashaw, author of Soar, Adam, Soar

“Dominic is a skillful and even-handed editor, with a gentle insistence on making your work the best it can be. Highly recommend!” — Jeremiah Brown, author of The 4 Year Olympian

Our timetable of 6 months could have ended on time, but Dominic was determined to ...

I've worked with Dominic on two separate projects. Both times I was amazed by his ability to combine thorough, line-level edits with high-level, strategic plot re-structuring suggestions. With the latter, he has almost a chess-master's ability to offer up to a writer various plot paths she or he might consider to help achieve their dramatic objectives. I was also impressed with Dominic's ...
