Overview

I am a freelance editor and writer who was nominated for a National Magazine Award for short features in 2019. In 2012, I was a key editor among the Toronto Star team that won a National Newspaper Award for long feature. My editing clients include or have included Maclean's, MarS, Jacob Richler's magazine Canada's 100 Best Restaurants, the Toronto Star's Editorial and Op Ed pages, and Mediacorp's Top Canadian employers. In traditional books, I have also edited Paul Berton's SHOPOMANIA: OUR OBSESSION WITH POSSESSION (Douglas & McIntyre), Peter Godard's THE GREAT GOULD (Dundurn), Rick Westhead's FINDING MURPH (about a former hockey star who ended up homeless; HarperCollins) and TALKING ABOUT DEATH WON'T KILL YOU: THE ESSENTIAL GUIDE TO END-OF-LIFE CONVERSATIONS, by Dr. Kathy Kortes-Miller (ECW). I have written for the Toronto Star (including a piece about boxing to ameliorate the symptoms of Parkinson's), ON Nature (I was nominated for a Canadian National Magazine Award for my article on wild American ginseng) and University Affairs. I have an extensive background in health stories, and in recent years have written for Sunnybrook Magazine (including pieces on the Stop the Bleed program, Sunnybrook's response to the Yonge St. van attack, and using 3D printers to make prosthetic sockets for joints), Sinai Health Magazine (an article on biomedical research at the Lunenfeld-Tanenbaum Research Institute, another on pregnancy and ostomies, and a lengthy interview with renowned diabetes researcher Dr. Bernard Zinman), MediaPlanet (various pieces on medicine), MaRS (pieces on at-home diagnosis of sleep apnea, and on women in tech and STEM) and Mediacorp, among others. And I penned a chapter in the 2008 book THE LUCKY ONES: OUR STORIES OF ADOPTING CHILDREN FROM CHINA (ECW Press). I have extensive experience as a full-time editor at the Toronto Star and Maclean's (where I was a managing editor for my last several years), including substantive editing of long-form journalism, and am also a seasoned feature writer and a critic who has reviewed books (mainly for the Toronto Star) and films (for the Toronto Star and Maclean's). For a year at the Toronto Star, I was chief handling editor of weekly e-books (of between 6,000 and 25,000 words) in the now-defunct Star Dispatches e-book program.
