I love ALL books, but especially genre and speculative fiction—mystery, thriller, sci-fi, fantasy, horror, and anything weird and wonderful!

Overview

>>> note: because I have a bunch of signed client work coming up, I won't be taking on any new developmental editing projects until early 2022 (except for existing clients, of course!) <<<

Hello! I'm a freelance writer and editor, a learning and development professional, and a published author. I've worked for financial and marketing firms as an instructor, technical writer, and instructional designer. I've written over a hundred newspaper columns and features (mostly about REALLY boring topics) as a journalist and stringer. I know what it's like to work under deadline and get things done. And, like everyone here, I'm a book lover.

I've helped many authors achieve their dream of publication, whether it be traditionally published or as an indie author, novels to short stories. I'm a board member at a local nonprofit writing center, where I run critique groups and work with both pre-published and established authors. I also run groups for indie authors, for authors writing query letters and submission packages, and for speculative fiction (horror, sci-fi, fantasy) writers and readers. I'm used to working closely with authors at all stages of their writing careers, whether they're looking to traditionally publish, indie publish, or write for themself.

I'm also a book marketer and work with authors to make sure that their books get visibility, sales, and reviews. A lot of this work is behind-the-scenes Amazon work and targeted advertising—I stay away from charging lots of money for marketing services that may or may not work, and instead customize every offer to give clients only what they need and want.

I especially love partnering with clients who want someone to answer their questions and help propel their careers well after my edits are done. I'll help you try to land an agent, navigate the world of indie publishing, and make your book visible to the world. After our work is done here, I'll always be available for guidance when you need me. I will be an advocate and partner for your book, not just someone you've paid to help make it excellent (and we WILL make it excellent!).

One final thing: the best part of my job is when I get to add a new client book to my Reedsy profile (or when I get to buy a client's book). I LOVE seeing my clients publish their work!

I'm honored to be part of your writing journey however I can. Thank you for trusting me with your work. And congratulations on getting this far with your project! — Dave P.

Dave did a thorough job on my manuscript. He was very responsive and patient to answer my questions. This is my debut novel and the first time working with an editor, and he made it an easy journey.

Dave is a great editor who really grasped the voice of my book, but even more important to me is that he didn't make me feel like some kind of number on an assembly line. This writing business, it's very personal to us writers! We don't like feeling like we're just a waste of someone's time. Dave is very personal and hands on and willing to help me beyond just an editorial "roll in the hay." I'...

David Rothman
Dave was the perfect editor for No Taller than My Gun. He has a genuine fondness for offbeat books in, among others, the action-adventure genre. I asked Dave for his most candid criticism, and he obliged while also coming up with helpful suggestions, one of which resulted in my writing an essential new chapter. Dave and I didn’t always agree, but then neither of us expected this to happen. His ...
