Natalia Remis

Natalia Remis – Editor

I'm a dedicated and enthusiastic children's book editor and proofreader with six years of experience at a major publisher.

Overview

I want to help you take your picture book or early reader manuscript to the next level, whether you're getting ready to submit to agents, preparing for self-publication, or honing your craft.

I have six years of experience editing and proofreading children's books at Scholastic, where I worked mostly on picture books and middle grade novels. Some of my favorites to associate edit at Scholastic were written by authors like Jane Yolen, Molly Bang, David Shannon, Rodman Philbrick, Laura Resau, and Lulu Delacre.

I'd like to help you understand your manuscript's strengths as well as areas for improvement and development. We can work on this in various ways, from an editorial letter with overarching ideas, to comments in-manuscript, depending on the stage and needs of a project.

It's generally best to begin the process with an Editorial Assessment, in which I'll provide you with an editorial letter with detailed feedback on form, style, character, plot, and the commercial viability of your text in the trade market, as well as my advice for next steps. If you'd like to continue working together, we can then move to a Developmental Edit, for which I will provide detailed in-manuscript edits and comments.

In addition, I can provide thorough and knowledgeable copy editing and proofreading for those further along in the process and who do not plan large-scope revisions to a text.

It's extremely fulfilling to help authors improve their work and chances at success in a competitive field. Let me know if you'd like to work together!

Work experience

Scholastic

May, 2014 — Jul, 2018 (about 4 years)
At Scholastic, I assisted with editing picture books, middle grade, and YA for Scholastic Press, the Blue Sky Press, and Orchard Books, evaluating manuscripts and associate editing books from pre-acquisition to publication. Many of these books garnered starred reviews and critical acclaim. I also attended many industry conferences and led workshops to help authors learn the ins and outs of publishing and prepare their work for submission and publication.

Scholastic

May, 2015 — Jul, 2018 (about 3 years)
I professionally copy edited and proofread chapter books, middle grade novels, and YA for Scholastic, some with very complex layouts that incorporated art and design elements into the text.

Scholastic

Sep, 2012 — May, 2014 (over 1 year)
As a production intern on the cross-channel team at Scholastic, I proofread a diverse list of books licensed by Scholastic's Book Clubs and Book Fairs. Because Clubs and Fairs sell books directly to children in school, they only license books with indubitable kid appeal. This exposure taught me the types of books kids are excited about and gave me a broader understanding of the children's market outside of Scholastic's own list.

Natalia's comments were precise and helpful. Her knowledge of what a children's book should sound like was excellent and her suggestions specific to the genre, which was quite helpful. Anyone writing a children's book would profit from her insights.
