Michelle Petrie

Michelle Petrie – Marketer

Metadata manager for a rapidly expanding, independent Canadian publisher (Portage & Main Press/HighWater Press).

Overview

I am a metadata manager for the publishing industry with experience in writing promotional copy and business communications. I have been working on writing summaries, promotional headlines, and keywords to promote titles in the Amazon algorithm. I'm excited to bring my experience with metadata to help you promote your book!

My expertise is in picking out the likely keywords that a potential customer may use to find your book, as well as creating a professional looking blurb to entice them. Studies have shown that a good set of keywords can increase visibility of a book, which can lead to increased sales.

I have a degree in English literature, previously taught English abroad, and have worked in communications and content management for the last ten years. I am speedy, professional, responsive, and collaborative.

Projects

Auditing 200+ titles in the backlist

This is a continuous task that involves auditing our titles to ensure they appear correctly on vendor and book catalogue sites such as Edelweiss. This involves periodically refreshing metadata terms, such as the keywords, BISACs as new ones are released, and comparative titles. By doing this, I'm helping the title remain relevant in search results.

Metadata and descriptive copy for S25 and F25 titles

I was able to write the main description, promotional headline, short description, key sales points, and keywords for the Spring and Fall season of titles released in 2025. These titles ranged from YA graphic novels, picture books for children, an adult non-fiction 'coffee table book', and updated editions of Canadian educational textbooks.

I make considerations for what sort of phrases and language will hook potential readers, including parents, grandparents, librarians, and educators. I also ensure the tone of the copy remains consistent to the reader interest level.

I love our catalogue. I believe the titles we work on are important, meaningful, educational, and entertaining.

Metadata and descriptive copy for S24 and F24 titles

Wrote the initial draft of copy for each book's description, short description, promotional headline, and the key selling points, which required me to examine the placement of this title within the marketplace. I also wrote the keywords and sourced comparative titles.

Metadata and descriptive copy for S23 and F23 titles

Wrote the initial draft of copy for each book's description, short description, promotional headline, and the key selling points, which required me to examine the placement of this title within the marketplace. I also wrote the keywords and sourced comparative titles.

K-12 Metadata Remediation Project

Remediated the metadata of 250 ebooks. The remediations
typically focused on improved keywords and categories and on surfacing award, review, and Canadian authorship information by highlighting the information in the appropriate fields.
