Lynne Lanning

Lynne Lanning – Designer

Experienced editorial art director and book designer covering creative non-fiction book design and all aspects of editorial publishing

Overview

I have many years design experience across numerous magazines. I was the Design Director for Psychologies Magazine in the UK, a women's interest mindfulness and wellbeing monthly publication with sole responsibility for its entire design and production and working remotely at home for 4 years.

Branching out into book design, I have been involved in book interior layout and design for a number of publishers from Harper Collins, Batsford Books, Pavilion Books and GMC Publications across a wide variety of genres, from Textiles and Upholstery to Cookbooks and Art & Interior design! Extremely hard working and able to work well under pressure and to tight deadlines I am reliable and organised with meticulous attention to detail.

I am also available to design any aspect of editorial publishing from magazines and brochures and interior layout artwork from pre-set samples or from scratch!

I am also experienced in art directing photo shoots from model casting to photographic locations and on set art direction, commissioning illustrations, sourcing images from photo agencies, infographics and typography.

Work experience

Self-employed

May, 2021 — Present

As a freelance Art Editor/Director and Non Fiction Book Designer, I am able to take a project from its initial stages through to setting up style sheets and templates and onto print. I have experience in commissioning illustration and excellent picture research skills. I have completed several book interior layouts. A recent commission was revamping a 300 page book on Upholstery from the 1990's which involved resizing the book and updating the style sheets to create a more modern fresher feel. I also undertook the layout for a 200 page illustrated interior design book which involved approximately 1000 pieces of artwork. Other books have included an art coffee table book on sketching, crocheted and knitting pattern books on houseplants and animals, textiles and a cookbook.
I am also still involved in editorial publishing and an available for all magazine style content and publishing material.

Jan, 2013 — May, 2021 (over 8 years)

I was the Design Director for Psychologies Magazine in the UK, a women's interest mindfullness, self-help and wellbeing monthly publication. Initially employed as a freelance designer, then employed as Deputy Art Editor and finally Art Director. During that time budget cuts resulted in me becoming the only member of the Art Department which coincided with the team leaving the offices and working as a remote team. I was responsible for all aspects of design and production and photoshop manipulation of images ready for press. I also undertook picture research across a wide variety of agencies and commissioned illustrators for the magazine when necessary.
