Manage the copyediting and production of fifteen to twenty scholarly and general-interest books per season. Hire and oversee freelance editors, determine copyediting schedules, clean up and code manuscripts, guide and advise authors, assist sponsoring editors in assembling art and permissions, and prepare final manuscripts for design. Carefully check all aspects of manuscripts, in close communication with proofreader, production coordinator, and designers, as they move through each phase of production. Edit and proofread selected manuscripts and page proofs in-house. Edit catalog copy for my titles and assist in proofreading of two seasonal catalogs annually.
Self-employed
Edit and proofread a wide variety of materials, including scholarly papers and book-length manuscripts, fiction, and exhibition catalogs. Prepare indexes for scholarly and trade books. In the 1990s and early 2000s wrote and published several young adult nonfiction books for the Creative Company in Mankato, Minnesota, for a series on famous authors and a series on architecture.
Dushkin Publishing Group
Edited a series of supplementary college-level textbooks in the social sciences. Worked with editors, designers, and support staff to ensure accuracy and meet deadlines.
Windsor Publications
Selected photographs, both historical and contemporary, for coffee-table books about cities in the U.S. and Canada. Conducted photo research, corresponded and negotiated with photographers, obtained permissions, wrote captions, and worked with in-house designers and text editors.
Mayfield Publishing Company
Assisted one of the acquisitions editors in a textbook publishing company. Sought and developed manuscripts for publication, designed and published a newsletter to encourage potential authors, and conducted market research.
