Kate Bohdanowicz

Kate Bohdanowicz – Editor

I've edited more than 50 non-fiction books, on subjects as diverse as Shakespeare and serial killers, Terry Pratchett and Arsenal.

Overview

My background is in newspapers, having written and edited for the national press for 16 years. I started off in showbiz, but my specialisms are health and education and I've written extensively on both subjects. I'm also a qualified teacher.

I've been freelancing for Pen and Sword Books since 2013. I help commission authors and have enabled around 100 writers to land book deals. I've edited more than 30 non-fiction books for P&S – and this includes developmental editing, copy-editing, rewriting and proofreading. I've since branched out on my own and have a lot of experience with biography, history, memoir, true crime and general non-fiction but I don't touch fiction.

Known as a 'safe pair of hands', I'm a confident editor with a keen eye for a badly written sentence, repetition and a typo. I make bold decisions that improve the flow and structure of your book to ensure that the finished product is as good as possible. I'm pleased to say I've had many repeat clients and am also booked via word of mouth.

As well as writing and editing, I work as a lipspeaker, providing communication support for deaf people who prefer to lipread than use sign language. I also have level 2 British Sign Language.

Testimonials

Marc Burrows:

Kate edited my book The Magic of Terry Pratchett, and was an absolute joy to work with. Not only is she fastidiously accurate and has an excellent eye for flow and detail, she was also willing to listen to my ideas and arguments, meaning we very much sculpted the final shape of the book together. I never once felt in anything less than capable hands, and I’d work with her again in a heartbeat. She also has the patience of a saint.

Amanda Thomas:

Kate was Editor on my book, ‘The Nonconformist Revolution’ for Pen and Sword Books (2019-20). We had not worked together before but her introductory email made me feel immediately at ease. Kate was a pleasure to work with and extremely professional. She was thorough, meticulous, knowledgeable, and worked quickly. She was also constantly mindful of the need to be empathetic and reassuring. I would happily work with Kate again.

I was very please with the quality and professionalism of Kates work, she brought my book alive! Helping to sculpture a very complicated story into easy reading, I don't want to leave a too good of a review just incase she's too busy for me next time. You definitely won't go wrong with Kate.

This was a daunting project for me and l felt a little overwhelmed, however once Kate got involved she got me to the finish line of a manuscript I'm now proud of. If l had to do this again, l wouldn't work with anyone else. Good luck to you Kate and thank you once again.

Kate was a delight to work with! Her meticulous attention to detail while proofreading my non-fiction educational book was commendable. I learned valuable lessons on improving my punctuation and grammar for my future books. I'm thrilled to have found a proofreader I can confidently work with again in the future. Thanks Kate. x

Kate has been wonderful to work with. Diligent and wise, her skills and experience have turned my ideas and research around a complex area into a work that is not only comprehensible to the interested layperson, but is also publishable. The icing on this cake is that as I write this she's also pitching it to a publisher on my behalf. She's far exceeded my expectations and I cannot recommend ...
