Overview

My background is in newspapers, having worked at the London Evening Standard and the Daily Express where I was diary writer, columnist, news reporter, deputy health features editor, acting health features editor, books editor and casual features editor. I left to train as a teacher of adults and, for a while, combined the two careers by teaching and writing about it for the Times Educational Supplement. I've also written for The Sunday Times and The Telegraph and have freelanced as an online sub for Nursing Standard magazine.

I've been working at Pen and Sword Publishers since 2013. I help commission authors and have enabled 100 or so writers to land book deals. I also edit for P&S – and this includes developmental editing, copy-editing, rewriting and proofreading. I've worked on almost 30 non-fiction books including The Magic of Terry Pratchett by Marc Burrows, The Nonconformist Revolution by Amanda Thomas and the autobiographical Case of Stephen Downing.

Known as a 'safe pair of hands', I'm a confident editor with a keen eye for a badly written sentence, repetition and a typo. I make bold decisions that improve the flow and structure of your book to ensure that the finished product is as good as possible.

As well as writing, I work as a freelance communication support professional for deaf people.

Testimonials

Marc Burrows:

Kate edited my book The Magic of Terry Pratchett, and was an absolute joy to work with. Not only is she fastidiously accurate and has an excellent eye for flow and detail, she was also willing to listen to my ideas and arguments, meaning we very much sculpted the final shape of the book together. I never once felt in anything less than capable hands, and I’d work with her again in a heartbeat. She also has the patience of a saint.

Amanda Thomas:

Kate Bohdanowicz was Editor on my book, ‘The Nonconformist Revolution’ for Pen and Sword Books (2019-20). We had not worked together before but her introductory email made me feel immediately at ease. Kate was a pleasure to work with and extremely professional. She was thorough, meticulous, knowledgeable, and worked quickly. She was also constantly mindful of the need to be empathetic and reassuring. I would happily work with Kate again.
