Kate Bohdanowicz

Kate Bohdanowicz – Editor

I've edited more than 65 non-fiction books, on subjects as diverse as Shakespeare and serial killers, Terry Pratchett and Arsenal.

Overview

My background is in newspapers, having written and edited for the national press for 16 years. I started off in showbiz, but my specialisms are health and education and I've written extensively on both subjects. I'm also a qualified teacher.

I've been freelancing for Pen and Sword Books since 2013. I help commission authors and have enabled around 100 writers to land book deals. I've edited more than 40 non-fiction books for P&S – and this includes developmental editing, copy-editing, rewriting and proofreading. I've since branched out on my own, and added another 25 books to my portfolio. I have a lot of experience with biography, history, memoir, true crime and general non-fiction. I do edit some fiction but it's not my specialist area.

Known as a 'safe pair of hands', I'm a confident editor with a keen eye for a badly written sentence, repetition and a typo. I make bold decisions that improve the flow and structure of your book to ensure that the finished product is as good as possible. I'm pleased to say I've had many repeat clients and am also booked via word of mouth.

As well as writing and editing, I work as a lipspeaker, providing communication support for deaf people who prefer to lipread than use sign language. I also have level 2 British Sign Language.

Testimonials

Marc Burrows:

Kate edited my book The Magic of Terry Pratchett, and was an absolute joy to work with. Not only is she fastidiously accurate and has an excellent eye for flow and detail, she was also willing to listen to my ideas and arguments, meaning we very much sculpted the final shape of the book together. I never once felt in anything less than capable hands, and I’d work with her again in a heartbeat. She also has the patience of a saint.

Amanda Thomas:

Kate was Editor on my book, ‘The Nonconformist Revolution’ for Pen and Sword Books (2019-20). We had not worked together before but her introductory email made me feel immediately at ease. Kate was a pleasure to work with and extremely professional. She was thorough, meticulous, knowledgeable, and worked quickly. She was also constantly mindful of the need to be empathetic and reassuring. I would happily work with Kate again.

The whole process was quite smooth. She asked relevant questions to get a more complete picture and did a great job of organizing the writing. I would recommend!

Kate provided me with much valued editorial advice and input for my book ‘A Disenchantment of Teachers’. I’ve described that input (within the ‘Acknowledgements’) as being ‘on point’ firstly because it was very direct, as it needed to be. It highlighted key issues relating to structure, tone an...

Do I really need an editor? If you're asking this question let me point you in the direction of Kate. I thought I had my mss pretty well sussed on the editing front but how wrong could I be. Kate turned my 'sow's ear' writing into a silk purse and all done in a friendly professional manner. She i...

I have never written a book before and having done a first draft, was keen to get some feedback to see what direction I needed to go in/what was working and what wasn't. Kate provided me with really useful feedback and has helped me to see what i was finding too hard to see on my own. I'm looking...

What factors influence the ideal paragraph length in nonfiction writing?

There's no concrete rule, and this is where reading your work aloud can help you decipher how your writing sounds when it's spoken. Paragraph length can effect pace and flow. Very long paragraphs make your book look dense and turgid. Readers can get bogged down in all the information and feel li...
