Joie Davidow

Joie Davidow – Editor

I am a nationally published American author with more than 35 years of experience working with writers from beginners to prize winners.

Overview

For more than a decade, I have been working with writers as a freelance coach, book doctor, and editor in genres ranging from memoirs to historical novels, sci-fi, and fantasy. My goal is to help the writer achieve their goals for the book and use my experience with agents, publishers, and readers to bear. As much as possible, I explain the changes I make in the hope that I will not only improve the book but help the writers to improve their skills, as well.

My published books include "Infusions of Healing" (Mexican-American Traditional Medicine, pub. Simon & 5) and my memoir, "Marked for Life" (pub. Crown). I edited two volumes of short memoirs for Alfred A. Knopf ("Las Christmas," "Las Mamis"). My published novels include "I Wouldn't Leave Rome to Go to Heaven" and "An Unofficial Marriage," a historical novel published by Arcade in March 2021. My latest book, "Anything But Yes," a historical novel set in 1749 Rome, was published by Monkfish in October 2023.

I was the founder and editor-in-chief of two national magazines, L.A. Style and Si, and the co-founder and editor of the L.A. Weekly, overseeing the culture and entertainment coverage and writing a weekly Style column.

As an editor, my aim is to help the author deliver his or her message with clarity, ease, and precision without altering your unique voice. Anything that distracts from the message, anything that causes the reader to stumble, needs fixing.

I'd be happy to arrange a conversation with you at your convenience. I like to begin my client relationships that way so I'm sure I understand their needs and concerns, and I will edit a page or two so you get an idea of my work before we get started. Editing samples are available on request.

I am a member of the Authors Guild and the European Association of Creative Writing Teachers.

Hoping to hear from you!

Work experience

Self-employed

Jan, 2008 — Present

I provide developmental and line editing, as well as coaching and encouragement to writers in all genres, working with books in all stages of completion . I will help a writer take an idea and develop it into a ready-to-publish manuscript, and I can put the final polish on an almost-finished draft. I refine the language of a manuscript without losing the author's voice, help structure a book to hold the reader's interest and improve the skills of writers who work with me.

American Express Publishing

Mar, 1985 — Dec, 1992 (almost 8 years)

I was the founder and editor-in.-chief of this award-winning publication. I left to found Sí magazine, serving Latinos in the United States, before becoming a freelance author and book editor.

Joie exceeded what I thought I would get from a copy editor. I came to her with what I thought was my highest work, and she made it tighter. If you're searching for an editor to elevate your writing, while also preserving your voice, look no further. Go with Joie.

Since a lot of my book involves Christ Consciousness, I will write this review through that lens... GRATEFUL: Grateful that Joie went above & beyond in creating a cover design, which I did not even ask for as part of the job. That showed a great deal of creativity and thoughtfulness, which I truly appreciate. I would definitely recommend Joie for her aesthetic design work. Joie also went above...

Joie has helped me achieve what I set out to accomplish with my first book in a language which is not my native one. She made my whole manuscript fit together holistically, by doing necessary deletions, additions, restructuring. Many thanks.
