Johanna Rempel – Translator

A good literary translation shouldn't feel like a translation.

I've been translating novels from English into German for several years, working on both standalone books and complete series. What I love most about the job is the part that goes beyond getting the words right: finding the voice of a story and making sure its tone, humor, atmosphere, and character voices carry over naturally into German.

For me, a successful translation should give German-speaking readers the same feeling as the original. Sometimes that means staying very close to the source, sometimes it means finding a completely different way to make a joke, a line of dialogue, or a particular mood work in German.

I'm especially interested in romance and fantasy, and I care a lot about natural dialogue, readability, and consistency – particularly in longer projects where characters and style have to remain recognizable from the first page to the last.

I take deadlines seriously, communicate openly, and genuinely enjoy working with authors and publishers to make a story feel at home in German.
