Jennifer Yankopolus

Jennifer Yankopolus – Editor

20 years' experience editing architecture and design books. I help authors make their books the best they can be.

Overview

Do you want to make sure:
— your book is interesting to readers?
— readers will understand your ideas?
— and, of course, the grammar, punctuation, and spelling are correct?

I will help you with all that and more to make sure readers will love your book. From the big picture to the smallest of details, I leave no stone unturned.

I specialize in architecture and design books, and have graduate degrees in architectural history and historic preservation. I provide all my clients with patient guidance and coaching whatever their skill level.

My experience:
I began my career as an editor at an architectural publisher where I learned all the steps in the editing and publishing process—everything from writing, editing, and proofreading to design and printing. Since then, I have worked with individual authors and historians, architecture and design firms, architecture-related governmental agencies, design associations, and museums.

Testimonials:
Thanks for your unusually excellent and sensitive skills of editing. You improve the clarity and readability without changing the meaning or intent. —Carroll Gantz, FIDSA, industrial designer

Working with Jennifer is awesome because she doesn’t slash and burn my drafts based on word count needs—instead taking the extra care and time to align with what I am trying to say. Together, we’re the Lennon and McCartney of article writing. —Scott Henderson, IDSA, Principle, Scott Henderson Inc.

Your work with me has been clarifying. I feel that I’ll now be delivering the best of what I have to offer to a wider public, while still sticking to my professional historical standards. I was worried about a lot of things a few months ago. Most of those have cleared up, and I know I’m presenting a good, strong picture of my work. —Historian at a liberal arts college

Thanks for being so considerate with your guidance …. With each of the ensuing rewrites/revisions, I found myself struggling to balance all of the different purposes of the piece. You made the last steps of the process as pain free as could be asked for. I appreciate that. —Tim Adkins, Director of Content Development, Industrial Designers Society of America

Work experience

Self-employed

Jan, 2003 — Present

I provide freelance editorial services to individual authors who are seeking a traditional publisher or who are self-publishing. Editorial services include critiquing first drafts, structural editing to focus and organize the text (also known as developmental editing), and line and copyediting. Other services include coaching authors though the writing process, advising about working with a publisher, supporting authors though the self-publishing process, and consulting with organizations to streamline their internal documents.

Industrial Designers Society of America

Jan, 2003 — Present

As a contributing editor of Innovation, the Industrial Designers Society of America’s quarterly journal, I edit articles written by design professionals, including non-native English speakers, and work closely with the authors to improve the clarity and intent of their words in keeping with the style guidelines of the publication.

The Greenway Group

May, 1999 — Dec, 2008 (over 9 years)

For the inaugural edition, I turned a five page outline into a 575-page book in seven months. I developed the content, wrote text, hired and supervised writers and proofreaders, worked with the graphic designer to develop the page template and cover, coordinated the content with the designer, hired an indexer, contracted with a printer, and coordinated and troubleshooted the production with the printer. For nine subsequent annual editions, I developed new content; supervised the writers, proofreaders, indexer, and designer; and coordinated with the printer.

The Greenway Group

May, 1999 — Dec, 2002 (over 3 years)

At The Greenway Group, an architectural publisher, I served as the editor and project manager for a number of design publications, including the annual Almanac of Architecture and Design, the Archidek series of architectural trading cards, and various books about the business of architecture. Provided developmental editing, line editing, and copyediting; coordinated freelance writers, proofreaders, and indexers; and supervised the graphic design and print production.

Jennifer was outstanding. Her edits revealed not only her professional skill, but a true caring that the book will communicate the intended ideas and concepts. My book is already so much better than it would have been without her help.
