Jean Lucas

Jean Lucas – Editor

I'm a publishing professional with 26 years experience editing illustrated nonfiction and fiction for both adults and children.

Overview

While I'm comfortable working in many different genres, I have particular expertise in the illustrated lifestyle, cookbooks, mind-body-spirit, self-care, sports, and biography categories. In the children's category, I specialize in middle grade fiction including illustrated novels and graphic novels. I love discussing and envisioning how the illustrated or photographic elements will coordinate with and complement the text to enhance the visual storytelling. I work in a completely collaborative manner and like to break down the development process into steps starting with a basic idea for a book. I can guide the writer on making their book unique to stand out from the competition in the marketplace. I start by developing a structure for the entire book by organizing the content to be included. Then I proceed with filling in the details for each chapter to create a book that's not only engaging to read and understand, but also a gorgeous, visually engaging book! On the fiction side, I can help tease out what makes a fictional character interesting, so that the reader can't wait to find out what happens to them next.

Work experience

Andrews McMeel Universal.

Apr, 1996 — Present
I have worked on many different genres over the years as I advanced to an executive editor at Andrews McMeel Publishing. I have 25+ years experience of editing many different categories of adult and children's books. I am visually oriented and have a flair for envisioning how an entire illustrated book comes together. So while I don't have the skills to execute design work, I am certainly comfortable mapping out a vision with the appropriate type and style of illustration/photography. My current position is more focused on finding new brands and voices to bring to life under custom publishing.
