Edie Jarolim

Edie Jarolim – Editor

Travel editor at Fodor's, Frommer's, and Rough Guides, memoir and food writing aficionado, love to nurture good writing in all genres.

Overview

My editing career is...eclectic. I started out proofreading Russian science journals, moved on to editing poetry —I got my Ph.D. from NYU in American literature and my dissertation was published as the Collected Poems of Paul Blackburn —and spent several years in travel publishing, working in-house for Frommer’s and Fodor’s in New York and Rough Guides in London. I did everything from copy-editing and British-to-American translating to line editing and project developing. I was the first series editor for the Paris-based Gault-Millau restaurant guides at Frommer’s, and oversaw the creation of the Wall Street Journal Guides to Business Travel at Fodor’s.

Since moving to Tucson, I’ve written five travel guides (including Arizona for Dummies), one dog guide (Am I Boring My Dog: And 99 Other Things Your Dog Would Like You to Know), and one memoir (Getting Naked for Money: An Accidental Travel Writer Reveals All). My articles on subjects ranging from going undercover (and uncovered) at a nudist resort to a rare deli speciality called rolled beef have been published in a wide range of national newspapers and magazines. But writing is tough, especially when you're trying to make it look easy. I enjoy nurturing other people's efforts—or whipping them into shape, if you're into that. My numerous freelance editing projects have included guidebooks, cookbooks, short stories, novels, websites… you name it. My clients have ranged from well known literary authors to a local public relations firm, and my services include everything from line editing to manuscript evaluation and coaching.

Edie did a great job with the basics of what I hired her for, but she went above and beyond that duty and provided me numerous insights, ideas, and feedback to improve my overall project. She was always responsive and thorough in our communication, and I appreciated her adaptiveness in flexing our schedule to allow for a better outcome. I would not hesitate to recommend her to others or use h...

I contacted Edie to help me bring a previously self-published children's book to a perfected state of sparkle and shine. My book had so many typos that, erroneously, I thought the publisher would fix. I had gone through it so many times, I couldn't see it anymore! She found a developmental error in the timeline of the story that I had missed and the previous editor missed. I am so appreciative ...

I received a 5 page synopsis of my manuscript. Although the feedback was helpful, I felt I received more of an editorial assessment than a developmental edit, which is what I paid for. I was also charged the 10% author fee as well as the 10% editor fee so paid a 20% fee to use this service. I feel the fee is excessive.

I was very clear about what Leslie would be getting, and she agreed to it. She sent me hard copy of the manuscript, not an electronic copy, so I could not have done online editing. Leslie omitted t...

Edie is a wonderful editor who bravely agreed to collaborate me knowing that I am a complete novice writer. Her constructive feedback and encouragement have already greatly improved the manuscript for what I sincerely hope becomes my first published book. I would absolutely work with her again and would encourage others to collaborate with her as well.

I’ve worked as a professional writer for over 20 years and was thrilled to work with Edie. She has a sharp eye for detail, a great instinct for story, and a strong point of view. She was able to read through what was an overly long manuscript and pinpoint what needed to be changed, edited out, or clarified for the reader. As any writer knows, it’s easy to get lose track of your narrative afte...
