As a lifelong reader, my enjoyment of books and interest in how they are created are what led me into publishing. I eventually landed at Peter Lang Publishing, an academic publisher specializing in the humanities and social sciences. I worked in the production department, gaining knowledge and developing skills in both managing editorial and production. After being an assistant for several years, I was promoted to a production editor, overseeing manuscripts from Microsoft Word files to finished book, both print and electronic versions. I also edited cover copy and proofread full manuscripts during my time at PLP.
I am currently a production editor at Scholastic, and I oversee the production of hardcover frontlist middle grade and young adult novels.
In addition to proofreading, I can also perform other production editorial–related tasks, such as comparing an OCR-generated file against its source to ensure accuracy of the characters or formatting manuscripts in Word to meet publisher submission specifications.
I oversee the production of 45–55 trade hardcover fiction novels per year, as well as the production of titles' corresponding bound and/or digital publicity galleys. My duties include but are not limited to: hiring freelancers and reviewing their work; checking printer proofs and ebooks; copy editing jacket copy and other ancillary materials; trafficking materials through departments; and working closely and communicating with the Design, Editorial, and Manufacturing Departments to produce excellent books on time and on budget.
