Jake Devine

Jake Devine – Editor

Currently a Senior Editor at Titan Comics, I manage a multitude of projects ranging from Doctor Who comics to Marvel humor books.

Overview

I originally interned at Titan Publishing Group six years ago, where I discovered the world of editing and saw how my irritating need for impeccable spelling and passion for the written word could be reconciled as the perfect job! Now I'm a Senior Editor (focused on comics and graphic novels).

Since starting as an assistant in 2017, I've worked on magazines and comics, proofreading, writing copy, sub-editing, and everything inbetween. My work covers a multitude of titles, seeing them through from inception to production! I interact directly with writers, artists, agents, representatives of other publishers/companies so am well versed in various aspects of a project and dealing with the needs of different people. In my time at Titan, I have gained much experience as an editor, honing my copywriting and proofreading skills, and developing a deeper insight into the publishing world from editorial, production and marketing perspectives.

Hopefully my skills and experience will be of great use for your project - things like the differences between US and UK spelling, for example, is something particular that I'm familiar with. I'm easy to work with and happy to chat through ideas and changes that you want whilst incorporating my suggestions.

The best thing for me as an editor is enjoying the work I do - not only do I love reading comics, but I'm a gamer and film/TV buff. Which is why it's an absolute blast to have worked on big franchises like Star Wars, Star Trek, and Marvel movie magazines, and in comics, Doctor Who, Tank Girl, Snowpiercer, with video game titles including Bloodborne, Horizon Zero Dawn, Life is Strange, and Medievil, among many others.

I also love to write in my spare time, working on my own fantasy novel right now! When I was 10 I won a short story competition in school for my own Harry Potter story (the Christmas Tree of Doom!), and wrote a short story for my GCSE coursework which earned me an A (I've since developed it into a small series, which remains unfinished). I wrote many short stories while at University studying English & Creative Writing, along with some poetry and the beginning of a novel which, again, I plan to complete one day!

I hope you can see how much I adore to write and read, and it will be a privilege reading your work and helping you achieve the best piece of writing you can. I don't see myself here to correct your mistakes, but to share my knowledge and experience to bring out your best abilities.

Jake was a fantastic editor to work with. Attentive, honest, and thorough, he helped hone my manuscript with thoughtful feedback and notes that elevated my writing and, ultimately, the story. He was also incredibly patient and understanding with any questions I had for him throughout the entire process. I'd love to work with Jake again on future projects, and if you're looking for a great edit...

Working with Jake was an absolute pleasure! He provided great feedback on my debut novel, he was flexible with our timelines, and I couldn’t have been any happier with the results. I highly recommend him for anyone else looking for a detail-oriented proofreader for their project.
