Hillary Godwin

Hillary Godwin – Editor

M.A. in Children’s and YA Literature. Experienced, friendly editor with a critical eye and an open mind. Let’s make magic together!

Overview

I’m an experienced editor with an M.A. in Children’s Literature and a diverse portfolio. While earning my graduate degree I spent a year working at Charlesbridge Publishing, where I helped edit book manuscripts under the personal mentorship of the Associate Publisher. Before that I worked at Possibilities Publishing Company (now Eaton Press), where I first realized I had a knack for this whole editing thing. One of the first books I edited won the 2017 Nautilus Book Award for YA Fiction, and from then on I was hooked. I’ve been editing books for 5+ years now, and recently graduated from my master’s program with a 4.0 GPA. I’ve spent the last three years embroiled in studying children’s literature, which has given me a sharp, fresh, and contemporary perspective. Simply put, I understand the trends, the expectations, and the flow of the publishing industry today, which makes my editing services top-notch in the field.

I’m a friendly, down to earth person with a sense of humor and a critical eye. I specialize in line editing, copyediting, developmental editing, and editorial assessments. Character arcs, plot development, and language crafting are all in my wheelhouse of expertise. I read carefully to make sure the manuscript maintains a sense of cohesive unity, with a strong beginning, middle, and end. From my feedback you can expect small mistakes fixed, along with detailed comments offering suggestions and clarification questions. Preserving your vision is always my primary goal when offering suggestions. Editorial assessments will be thorough and concise. Writing is both an art and a craft, and I want to help make your manuscript something you’ll be proud to publish. I'm keen to work on projects that fall into the categories of young adult fiction, middle grade fiction, and picture books. I also specialize in LGBTQ fiction and adult literary fiction, and am open to working with other genres as well.
