Overview
As a 3-time published and agented author, I have learned a lot about the craft of writing and the craft of preparing a manuscript for submission.
I specialize in developmental edits for middle grade authors. My favorite books to read and edit are heartfelt character-driven stories. I also offer developmental edits for young adult authors. I love coming-of-age stories where a character grabs onto me and won't let go.
As a writer, I need to know what I'm doing right along with constructive suggestions about how I can improve my manuscript. That's why my editorial approach always begins with positive feedback! I have also found that the most helpful feedback refers to specifics, both in an editorial letter and through detailed in-text comments. While I can provide feedback based on years of studying the writing craft, it is ultimately up to the writer to make decisions about how to revise their story. For those who would like to discuss the feedback, I offer a 15 minute conversation or will answer follow-up questions by email if preferred. I am here to support and encourage authors so they can feel confident they are presenting their best work.
For writers looking for a shorter critique, I offer feedback on basic agent submissions: query, synopsis, and first 10 pages.
TESTIMONIAL
"I feel very fortunate to have received a critique from Miriam Spitzer Franklin for one of my middle-grade manuscripts. Her astute comments, both in-line and big-picture, helped me bring my story to the next level."
---Jenny Mattern, Represented by Nicole Eisenbraun of Ginger Clark Literary
"Through Miriam's guidance, the plotting, characterization and emotional depth of my writing greatly improved, transforming the manuscript." ---Jaime Formato, Represented by Lauren Galit, author of Roll with Initiative (2022)
"Miriam provided great tips on pacing and suggestions on how to make sure the overall story stayed true to my main character instead of veering off too much into other subplots. Overall, a very insightful and helpful critique. --Dianna Winget, award-winning MG author of the Poppy Parker series.

I offer developmental edits on middle grade and young adult manuscripts as well as feedback on the basic submission package (query, synopsis, first ten pages). I provide an editorial letter, in-text notes, and offer a follow-up phone call. I have also mentored writers through multiple rounds of revision.
Marvin Academy
I have been teaching the writing craft and process to elementary and middle school students for over 30 years. Working with students has connected me with the readers of middle grade stories so I am better prepared to help writers tap into their own authentic middle grade voice.
Skypony Press
My first middle grade novel, Extraordinary, was published in 2015 by Skypony Press, followed by my second and third novels in 2017 and 2019. Extraordinary was chosen as a Scholastic Book Club selection for both the US and Canadian markets. Extraordinary also sold foreign rights. My first two books were reviewed by the Atlanta Constitution-Journal. All three books received favorable reviews from School Library Journal, Kirkus, and others.
Big Universe
I edited ELA lesson plans and assessments.
