Hannah Fergesen

Hannah Fergesen – Editor

I am a publishing professional with 10 years experience editing, polishing, and selling highly reviewed and bestselling books to publishers.

Overview

I am a former literary agent and current publishing professional with nearly a decade of experience in the publishing industry. I have worked with star-reviewed, bestselling, and awards-nominated YA and Adult category authors such as Grace D. Li, Simon Jimenez, Rebecca Mahoney, and many other fantastic writers. My own debut science fantasy, THE INFINITE MILES, is now available, so I'm very familiar with the industry from both sides.

Additionally, I've taught classes for Manuscript Wishlist Academy and writers conferences, focusing on topics like Stakes, Structure, and Outlining. I have a passion for books that employ familiar tropes well, and for books that break the rules with grace. My forte is speculative fiction in all age categories, and as a queer non-binary editor, I have a particular fondness for queer and gender-expansive stories.

An editorial assessment fee on your novel will include: An assessment/edit letter ranging from 3-5+ pages and a one hour post-mortem call. Note: I can be hired for short stories as well, though the assessment letter will be shorter as a result.

A development edit fee will include: An edit letter ranging from 3-5+ pages, a line edit (this is not to be confused with a copy-edit or proofread - I will be pointing out inconsistencies, redundancies, prose confusion, questions about plot/character/etc.,), and a one hour post-mortem call.

**Please note: if you ask for a development edit, but I determine based on your pages that a broader editorial assessment is more appropriate for you, I will let you know and my offer will be amended accordingly.

A query review fee will include: 2 passes on your 1-2 page query and a thirty minute post-mortem call.

**Please note: If you want help with your entire submission package, please select Query Review and specify in your request that you are looking for help with your entire submission package. The fee for this review will include: 2-3 passes on your query, an edit letter for your first fifty pages/15k words (this is based on the average number of words per published page) and 2-3 passes on your synopsis, plus a thirty minute post-mortem call.

I also offer Book Coaching and Consultation! This call will be for whatever questions you might have about the traditional publishing industry (how to find an agent, what does an agent do, questions about whether the agent you DO have is right for you, brainstorming an idea, questions about the market, etc), and can be booked in 30-60 minute slots.

My ideal client is not starting from ground zero. Because of my experience in traditional publishing, what I have to offer you is best geared toward people with *some* familiarity of the writing process and/or the industry. I'm not the best person for folks just starting their journey and want to edit or discuss their very first idea.

Hannah is an insightful editor with a thorough knowledge of my genre (fantasy). She was honest but encouraging and understood exactly what I was trying to do with my book. Communication was prompt and professional. She offers a Zoom or audio call after the edit letter is delivered, which was great added value compared to other Reedsy editors charging the same price.

Thank you, Emily! It was such a delight to work with you and I’d be happy to do so again in the future, should the need arise.

Hannah was communicative, transparent, friendly, and professional from my initial request onward and provided me an indispensable insider viewpoint on my submission materials that I could not have gotten from beta readers alone. Above all I was impressed with Hannah's willingness and ability to approach my story with as much attention, care, and incisiveness as though it were their own, not o...

My consultation with Hannah was exactly what I needed. I had several questions worked out in advance--spanning queries, comps, story structure, and the publishing industry-- and I doubted we would have time to get through all of them. However, Hannah had clearly read and absorbed the materials I sent in advance, and her thoughtful, informed guidance was both incredibly helpful and also very eff...
