Hannah Boursnell

Hannah Boursnell – Editor

Friendly, experienced editor who loves a great story. I've edited numerous bestsellers, including memoir, humour, lifestyle and fiction.

Overview

Over the years, I’ve helped novelists, journalists, actors, singers, cooks, comedians, entrepreneurs, innovators, musicians and historians (among many others) to share their stories with the wider world.

Whether you're an experienced writer or a ‘beginner’ with an extraordinary tale to tell, I can help you. I can help you get the words out of your head and onto the page, I can help you craft those words and sentences into the best possible shape, and I can help you figure out the best way to get those words of yours into the hands of readers. I am passionate about storytelling – fiction and non-fiction – and I have years of experience working with writers, as well as those who have never dared think of themselves as such, in a creative and collaborative partnership.

I’m a non-fiction specialist, but I’ve published fiction too and am an avid reader across (nearly) all genres. I worked for Little, Brown Book Group’s Sphere imprint for a decade, with four years before that at then-independent publisher Constable and Robinson. I graduated from City University’s MA in Publishing Studies in 2005, with distinction. I’ve published big, loud books and small, quiet ones; beautiful illustrated coffee-table books and weighty, wordy tomes. Humour, memoir, lifestyle, biography, current affairs and history are all favourites, but the joy of non-fiction is that you get to be a bit of a magpie – each new project, each new subject, is something new to learn and enjoy. There are very few subjects that I’m not willing to have a go at.

The editorial relationship is a partnership; a collaboration. I will work with you to shape your book into what you want it to be. It's your story; they're your ideas, your words – I'm there to support and give them a little spit and polish where necessary. If you think I can might be able to help you, let’s talk.

Work experience

Little, Brown Book Group

Aug, 2009 — Apr, 2020 (over 10 years)

I was an editor at Little, Brown for just over ten years, specialising in non-fiction but occasionally dabbling in fiction too. I commissioned widely across the scope of commercial non-fiction, and was very proud to publish numerous Sunday Times bestsellers, including two numbers ones.

Constable & Robinson

Sep, 2005 — Jul, 2009 (almost 4 years)

I began my career at Constable and Robinson, then a medium-sized independent publisher. I began as an Editorial Assitant, and progressed through the desk-editing team to the Managing Editor position, where I was responsible for editorial quality control and schedules.

Hannah was brilliant to work with. That's the first thing I'd like to say, I would recommend to anyone who requires these services to use her. Having never had an editorial assessment of my work before, I had no idea what to expect. But I came out of this with some postitive tweaks in mind, some slightly different ideas, amazing compliments and I really needed someone who when they read my ...

Working with Hannah, was like working one-on-one with a personal partner, not just an editor. Her attention to detail, her easy approach, and her thoughtful notes pushed our project to another level. Looking forward to working with her again!

Working with Hannah exceeded all of my expectations and I cannot recommend her more highly. Not only was she a professional and competent editor, she went above and beyond to help me with passion, respect and a truly gifted eye. Her pitch perfect notes were always sprinkled with her humor and humanity, which was invaluable to me with my material and as a debut writer. No question was too dumb...

Hannah is a true professional in her Art. We collaborated on my first Memoir draft and I am very impressed with what she gave me as feedback and most importantly how she communicated it to me. It was done in such a way, that will definitely help me bring my story to a level where readers will be able to relate in someway or another. Her suggestions and advices where all with a lot of respect t...

I feel that Hannah was very professional. She communicated promptly and clearly, and delivered her response in line with the timeline originally agreed to. This was my first time working with a professional editor, so my expectations were a little "fuzzy," in that I wasn't sure how the whole process would work. I found her advice very helpful, even though some of it didn't immediately mak...
