"I know how to write news because journalism is my profession. I know how to write novels because Avalon is my mentor. She’s a reliable, dedicated, and passionate editor. Of all the people I worked with during the production of my first book, she's the one person I will contact again when I decide to write a second book." —Kris Millgate, award-winning outdoor journalist and author of My Place Among Men

I am the Director of Editorial and Publishing Operations at Inkshares, an award-winning independent book publisher that focuses on developing 12-24 exceptional stories per year. Inkshares books have received starred reviews in every major trade publication, inclusion in the Amazon top five, and features on the front page of every major newspaper including The New York Times. This year, I'm looking forward to building out my freelance editing portfolio while also scouting new writing talent.

I'm an experienced developmental and copy editor with an intuitive eye for enhancing an author's unique voice and cultivating a singular story experience. Developing a novel is about making smart choices—page after page, draft after draft—and a diligent, discerning editorial lead is critical to your success. I work closely with fiction writers to develop a strong narrative structure, distinct setting, authentic characters, and flow-off-the-page writing. For nonfiction writers, I focus on developing clarity in your writing and ensuring that your manuscript offers as much value to your subject as possible. I approach each manuscript with rigor, insight, and creativity. My goal is not only to help you craft a story that could break out in a saturated marketplace, but to arm you with the skills to improve your writing and build a career in publishing great stories.

Please feel free to peruse the Inkshares website for a list of many of the books I've worked on, but below is a sampling per genre. My favorite fiction books to edit are thriller/suspense/horror and romantic comedy, but I love working with science fiction, young adult, and literary projects as well. I'm very open to myriad nonfiction projects but I have the most training in memoir, nature/environmental, and travel. I've worked with seasoned journalists and debut authors alike on everything from memoirs to genre-bending novels.

I am flexible and competitive on pricing. If my quote is out of your price range and you wish to work with me, please let me know—I am most often willing to make changes to meet both of our needs, especially for authors I know my talents and experience can serve well. For me, this is first and foremost a passion and only second a job.

Let's work together to make your story the best it can be! Reach out to me for an editorial letter, substantive editing, copyediting, publishing advice, and more.

Thorough edits that showed an eye for professionalism and style as well as a deep insight into the tone that the novel was shooting for.

This was my first experience with a literary editor. My friend Steven Pressfield told me to be very picky in choosing an editor and if you find one who believes in you stick with them forever! Avalon was incredible. The way that she understood my characters, their emotions and helped guide me in intelligent directions based on what was written already and what had not been shared helped me buil...

Avalon did a great job. I'm very pleased. She came up with quite a large number of valuable insights that I added to my novel. Well done Avalon! Thanks, Tom Lyons Author of - Grumpy Old Man, to be published January 2022.

From the very first conversation with Avalon, it was clear her approach was unlike the others. She worked hard to figure out what I needed from her services, offered to work within my budget, and was swift to communicate. Then she returned my manuscript. I was blown away by how much thought she put into her edits and the way she isolated how I might improve my voice. More than anything, I go...

Working with Avalon was one of the best parts of my writing experience. Her copyedits were artful and 100% thorough. They also carried a sense of shared passion for my project. With an open mind for collaborating, Avalon met me exactly where I wanted, snatching up the baton without a sound. After that, my novel was standing in front of me wearing a black tuxedo and a haircut, looking like an Ol...
