Francesca Ramadan

Francesca Ramadan – Editor

Publisher and freelance copyeditor with an eagle eye and a flair for health and social care publishing, legal content and the humanities.

Overview

With over 9 years of industry and editorial experience, ranging from poetry collections to peer-reviewed manuscripts, I am an accomplished writer and editor with a creative flair and a meticulous eye.

In my capacity as Publisher at a legal publishing house, I am responsible for the management of the product portfolio in print and digital, commissioning new, relevant content that is used by lawyers, human rights professionals and academics globally. I know what makes a valuable, compelling legal book, and can help you with yours!

During my experience as the editor of several healthcare journals, I became adept in all aspects of manuscript and publication development, from initial proposal to final proofing. My areas of focus include neurology and adult health and social care, but I've tried my hand at a multitude of healthcare specialities, including palliative care, gastroenterology and district nursing. With a background in legal and technical publishing, my speciality is translating high-level information into something a little more engaging.

I offer a professional and specialised copyediting service, working closely with my clients to address issues relating to writing style, flow and structure, as well as attending to errors in grammar, spelling and referencing and issues with ethics and research quality. I have worked on publications and papers covering a wide variety of disciplines and subjects—including (but not limited to!) leech barometers, architecture within the fairy tale and factors affecting health-related quality of life in Nepalese traumatic brain injury patients—so nothing is outside of my remit. What you can expect from me is timely and thorough editing and constructive feedback, moving past merely polishing up your publication, with the goal of making you a better writer and researcher.

Work experience

Intersentia UK

May, 2023 — Present

I'm proud to be the Publisher at Intersentia Ltd, an editorially independent publishing house with a legal focus and a strong emphasis on comparative methods, the protection of human rights and vulnerable groups, and transitional, climate and social justice. As Publisher, my responsibilities include managing new and existing titles and series, overseeing their delivery to production and their promotion on the market in collaboration with editorial and marketing colleagues. Actively signing new titles in and outside of book series and commissioning original content to create an editorial pipeline that encompasses commercial, market and capacity considerations is also part of my role, alongside overseeing the development and distribution of both our digital and print offerings. Cultivating and managing a network of authors, industry contacts and academics in the legal sphere also falls within my remit, which includes attending national and international conferences to represent Intersentia.

Mark Allen Group

Sep, 2019 — Apr, 2022 (over 2 years)

During my time at the Mark Allen Group, I was promoted twice for my commercial acumen and my ability to develop and improve journals in terms of content and style, holding the role of editor of three journals in total:
Nursing and Residential Care, the British Journal of Neuroscience Nursing and the British Journal of Community Nursing. As Editor, I was responsible for commissioning, budgeting for and developing original and engaging content relevant to specialist readers and conceptualising, planning and developing original publications to reach new audiences. Overseeing peer review and working closely with authors to develop their manuscripts, alongside editing, laying out and proofing manuscripts to a monthly deadline, was also part of my role. I contributed editorials, conference reports, interviews and other content, and acted as the point of contact for authors, freelancers and the readership, as well as collaborating with managerial and commercial teams and editorial boards.

ARK Group

Feb, 2018 — May, 2019 (about 1 year)

I was responsible for commissioning exceptional, relevant content for books designed to help legal and information management professionals navigate and thrive within a complex and dynamic market. I also acted as editor of these products, ensuring that Ark's books met the highest standards in terms of style and quality. Publications that I have commissioned and edited include "The Diversity Agenda: Lessons and Guidance from the Legal Profession", "Emerging Approaches to Law Firm Profitability", and "The Evolution of the Law Firm Library Function". Growing and managing relationships with both existing and potential authors was also part of my role, alongside being a contact for the industry.

Out-Spoken Press

Sep, 2016 — Dec, 2016 (3 months)

I performed general administrative duties, organised publicity events for new releases, and researched and created biographical notes and promotional copy. Communicating and collaborating with authors and other publishing houses, including Saqi Books, was also part of my role. I also utilised the skills gained from my extensive copyediting experience to assist in proofreading and editing manuscripts for publication, including the first anthology dedicated to writing by British Muslim women.

Self-employed

Jan, 2014 — Present

I perform developmental editing, copyediting and proofreading of undergraduate and postgraduate dissertations and theses or research papers from academics, clinicians and scientists (specialising in those relating to healthcare, medicine and pharmacology; social sciences, arts and humanities; and business, law and economics), assisting them to improve their writing to a publication-ready standard.
