Flannery McDermott

Flannery McDermott – Editor

Editor/writer of K-12 educational materials––English/Language Arts, Social Studies, Science * ELL/ELD curriculum * CCSS/state standards

Overview

I have been responsible for a myriad of duties, including writing and editing copy, monitoring communication between writers and editorial staff, facilitating movement of texts from manuscript stage to print through editorial, production, and design divisions, and explaining client policy and editorial procedure to outside editors and writers to ensure our product was high quality and authentic to our client’s vision and guidelines. I have also communicated with outside printers and vendors.

While working in educational publishing, I have written and edited copy for textbooks, ranging from leveled readers to standard textbooks and spanning many sub-genres of fiction as well as nonfiction. I also have extensive experience modifying and scaffolding text for differentiation as well as English Language learners. I have written as well as edited manuscript for every grade in the K-12 range, from grade-level reading and writing lessons and activities to college prep materials, working on assignments for companies such as Heinemann, Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, McGraw-Hill, National Geographic, and Pearson, among others. I have worked extensively adapting content to both Common Core and individual state standards.

Though my experience has primarily been writing, proofreading, and copyediting K-12 textbooks and materials, I also have some experience working with scholarly, scientific articles. That being said, I would welcome an opportunity to work outside of the educational/academic realm.

I am an experienced fact-checker, ensuring the validity and resonance of a text. I am highly detail-oriented; therefore, my eyes are keen. I am adroit with grammar as well as spelling.

I have worked in many platforms*, with extensive experience in Microsoft Office, Google Docs, Adobe InCopy, and K4. I am comfortable and savvy when it comes to a variety of documents as well as online programs and editing tools.

I have been working remotely for the past several years, and am very comfortable managing my own time and environment to ensure quality work is completed in a timely manner.
