Nicola Evans

Nicola Evans – Editor

Editor and proofreader with 15+ years experience, specialising in cookery, biography, history, politics, current affairs, self-help, travel.

Overview

I’m an editor with over 15 years of in-house and freelance experience at both independent and major publishers. I have worked on a wide-range of genres including cookery, biography, history, politics, current affairs, self-help, travel, humour, true crime, literary fiction and thrillers. I have worked with high-profile authors and have guided many first-time writers through the publishing process.

I enjoy collaborating with an author in order to get your work into the best shape it can possibly be before it reaches an audience. I can provide a light edit, extensive guidance and everything in between – we will discuss before I start working how deep you would like the copyedit or proofread to go. Careful and thorough, I have a keen eye for a typo and will correct things such as spelling, punctuation, grammar, syntax, tense and formatting. I will fact-check and ensure consistency regarding timeline, plot, stylistic choices, formatting and front- and endmatter. I am always mindful of retaining an author’s voice and will offer suggestions and comments with regards to style rather than simply going ahead and making changes. I am on hand to respond to messages punctually. No job is too big or too small. I look forward to hearing from you.

Preface Publishing, Random House

Jun, 2008 — Apr, 2013 (almost 5 years)

As Managing Editor of the Preface list I managed our publishing programme of fifty fiction and non-fiction titles per year through from delivery of manuscript to publication. My role included setting editorial schedules, responsibility for projects running on time and on budget, author liaison, working with authors and designers on flat-plans for highly-illustrated and cookery books, line editing, proofreading, commissioning and managing freelancers and ensuring work was done to the highest possible standard, collating proofs, briefing covers and working with internal and external designers, final sign-off on jacket artwork and text, attending acquisitions meetings.

Profile Books

Nov, 2003 — Jun, 2008 (over 4 years)

I worked in the editorial department of this successful independent non-fiction publisher. Working across the whole list, I fostered close relationships with publicity, sales and production departments, learning about all aspects of book publishing. My editorial duties included reporting on submissions, writing copy, liaising with authors on manuscripts and proofs. I managed the production of Profile's biannual catalogues which involved setting the schedules, writing the initial plan, proofreading and editing copy, working with the designer on proofs, checking corrections, briefing the cover and arranging for the appropriate files to be sent to the printer on time. My role also included rights – I created rights material and I attended the Frankfurt and London Bookfairs where I had a full schedule of meetings with foreign publishers in order to sell translation rights in Profile and Serpent’s Tail titles.

Nicola's work has truly exceeded my expectations; it's been outstanding. Not only did she provide invaluable comments throughout the manuscript, but her suggestions, comments, and edits were all clear and immensely helpful. Communication with her was easy, and she consistently responded promptly. The amount paid for her work was realistic, and I am really happy with what I paid. I am extremely ...

Collaborating with Nicola turned out to be a wonderful experience. She has kept the voices of my characters alive and genuine, in the spirit in which they were intended when I have started writing the book. Her suggestions have been caring, meticulous and deeply insightful. Nicola went above and beyond in her advice and I am deeply grateful for her work.

Nicola was fantastic, and this five star review is well earned. I couldn't be happier with my decision to have her edit my book, and of all her edits, I think there was just one that I ignored, she went above and beyond, and even suggested names for chapters I was struggling with. And her kindness and feedback were also really appreciated. I look forward to working with her agin next time. J...
