Eugene Smith

Eugene Smith – Designer

I'm a talented freelance illustrator who specializes in creating eye catching sci-fi, fantasy, horror and YA fiction illustrations.

Overview

I am professional illustrator with over 15 years of experience based in Chicago, Illinois. I graduated from the Academy of Art University in San Francisco, California with a degree in Painting and Drawing. My illustrations can be found in books, editorial magazines, comics, and even tarot cards. I am drawn to several genres including horror, science fiction, and fantasy. I love strong, expressive line work paired with atmospheric, moody colors and subtle texture.

My preferred method of working is digital, using a combination of Procreate and Photoshop to create stunning illustrations that captivate the viewer. Although my work is digital, I seek to create work that looks as if it was made using traditional methods, incorporating brush strokes and expressive line work. My passion is for creating illustrations that serve a narrative, either as covers, or as interiors, that successfully draw the viewer into new and exciting worlds. My work is bold, vibrant, atmospheric, and most importantly, unconventional!

In order to be as transparent as possible, my minimum fee for full cover design is $850.00. This includes wrap-around, full color artwork, as well as title/font design for the front and back cover as well as spine.

It was an incredible experience working with Eugene and watching the cover for my horror novel come to life. He can do the creepy stuff with ease, but what jumped out at me in his portfolio was the dreamlike, fairy tale quality of his work, and I wanted my cover image to be a blend of those styles. Eugene walked me through the steps of how he works toward a final image, and was responsive to m...
