Emily Klopfer

Emily Klopfer – Editor

I already love your story, let's edit it together. | Developmental editor who's smoothed tricky plot bits of #1 NYT bestselling YA authors.

Overview

I was born and raised in Alaska, and as you may know, in the winter time it gets dark...and cold. And since I was an only child, I read voraciously for entertainment. That love of books followed me to Yale University where I graduated with a B.A. in English and specialized in Children's Literature; I was even allowed to write the first fifty pages of a Young Adult novel for my thesis! I then went on to the Columbia Publishing Course in New York (again, working with Children's Literature), and began working at Bloomsbury Publishing a month after the course ended. I worked as an Editorial Assistant in the Children's Books department and had an incredible experience arguing with co-workers which powers magical unicorns should have, and how much cleavage on a Young Adult novel cover was too much cleavage. Those stories aside, I did gain great experience with the publishing world, and had the wonderful opportunity to work with New York Times bestselling authors and helping shape their books from the ground up. I took this experience to my freelance editing business, where I was offered an opportunity to edit a series of picture books being published by Starry Forest. This has since grown to where I have a client base myself and have now worked on everything from memoirs to plays to novels to essays, spanning everything from the children's to the adult genre.

I still read everything that comes across my desk with the same tenacity as those books I read as a child, and I want to bring that level of excitement and dedication to your story. I know how hard it is to write a book, both because I've written one, and because I've seen the publishing industry from the inside, and I want to do all I can to help make the process just a little less stressful for you. Thanks so much for checking out my profile, and I look forward to hearing from you!

Work experience

Self-employed

Jan, 2017 — Present

In this position I have worked on a dozen picture book adaptations of classic stories for Starry Forest Books, where I both suggested developmental edits, and provided copy editing services. As for my own clients, I have served as a sounding board for the structure of two memoirs and a novel, along with a collection of essays. With these clients, I have received both bare bones manuscripts and together we have fleshed out the overall content of the story, and I have also received first drafts where I edited for plot development and character consistency, and provided suggestions for where changes and/or clarification could be made.

Bloomsbury Publishing

Sep, 2015 — Dec, 2016 (about 1 year)

In this position I worked with New York Times bestselling children's book authors to provide feedback on the construction of their stories, design their book jacket content, and create the first Young Adult coloring book adaptation. Additionally, I reviewed numerous queries and selected stories to recommend for publication. My proudest moments are working directly with Sarah J. Maas on her Throne of Glass and A Court of Thorns and Roses series in an editorial capacity, along with stories from Elizabeth Eulberg and Kamilla Benko.

Emily has been completely wonderful throughout this whole process. She not only completed the editing when promised and in a professional manner, she also provided words of encouragement along the way. Her tactful criticisms have made my work better. I look forward to working with her again.

Working with Emily was amazing! She really knows what it takes to bring out the shine in a book and her passion in the field shows through as much as her experience in it does. I definitely recommend working with her. I know I'll be working with her again for my future books. Still astounded that I got to work with an editor who has worked with one of my favorite authors, not to mention got to ...

Emily treated my work with utmost respect and I can honestly say this is some of the best money I've ever spent. She was quick with responses and always willing to help throughout the process - and that to me is a big deal - communication is everything. Would recommend her services in a heartbeat. Thank you Emily!

Literally the best! I am so glad I followed my intuition when choosing Emily. My first draft of my book was a complete rollercoaster that really lacked structure and she helped me get it together and make realistic sense. Emily provided me ample suggestions and they all made sense. I loved chatting back and forth with her. She's also very flexible, this pandemic really threw so many wrenches in...
