Sara DeGonia – Editor

Editor/Writer w/ 15 years for Chronicle, etc. Specialties: providing fresh eyes to help you tell your story. UChicago Cert. and EFA member.

Overview

I'm as enthusiastic about your story/piece/writing as you are. With dedication, enthusiasm, empathy, and a bit of humor, we can work together to prepare your manuscript for critical eyes.

Hired as a copy editor on the college newspaper my first week of freshman year, the rest is history. Since then I've edited more than fifty books, including fiction, arts, photography, cooking, travel, design, and the list goes on. I'm well-versed in proofreading, copy editing, line editing, developmental editing, and any other type of editing you might prefer. Or maybe you need an index? Happy to handle that.

I've also written two published family travel guides, book reviews for The Kansas City Star newspaper, and three—almost four—novel manuscripts (waiting for the day I buckle down to make revisions).

Proud to have worked on dozens of popular titles, including THE COURT OF MEDB, EAMES: BEAUTIFUL DETAILS, SPIKE by Spike Lee, ALEXANDER GIRARD by Todd Oldham, and CHARLEY HARPER: AN ILLUSTRATED LIFE.

I'm the proud mama to two goofy girls, amateur kayaker, movie addict, and owner of more books than my husband would prefer.

If you're ready to collaborate, I'm ready to help you move forward. Whether it's baby steps or giant leaps for mankind, let's polish your piece and make it sing.

I hired Sara to edit my latest novel, and I'll be seeking her out again when I have another manuscript ready! Sara has great insight into narrative structure and characterization, in addition to the grammar skills needed to finesse a manuscript. (She's also hilarious, which makes the editing process way less tedious!)
Highly recommend Sara for any editing needs.
—Annie Cosby, Author of USA Today-recommended Hearts Out of Water series

I have had the pleasure of working with Sara over the last twelve years as both a full-time and freelance collaborator on many books. Sara is a consummate wordsmith and perfectionist when it comes to editing, while at the same time, she is also very flexible and accommodating to the needs of our authors and our publishing business. She is truly someone that I highly recommend for any editorial assignments.
—Gloria Fowler, Chronicle Books

Working with Sara is lovely, smooth, and reliable. Our publishing house produced two guide books written by Sara, and we are definitely delighted by her professionalism. Locations were chosen with great attention, and I can confirm the job was done perfectly. Sara has a journalistic approach, meaning she researches and double-checks all information.
It is also super easy talking with her, and all opinions are discussed in an open-minded environment. We definitely recommend her as an editor and writer.
—Giovanni Simeone, Publisher of SIME Books and Sunset & Venice

Sara is a top freelance editor we have relied upon for many years. She knows what publishers need and always delivers quality work on time.
I would highly recommend Sara to anyone looking to improve their manuscript or texts. She is a joy to collaborate with.
—Steve Crist, Chronicle Books

We have been working with Sara for many years now, and plan to do so well into the future. She is extremely punctual on responding to inquiries as well as delivering final material, all while providing exceptional attention to detail. As our business has grown, her expertise has too, allowing us to continue working with her not only for copy editing, but also for content creation, indexing, and much more!

Having learned so much from her editorial suggestions and insight I feel Sara has helped the book finally reach its potential. Hopefully we will be completing the manuscript and continuing with the sequel now in progress. I look forward to future collaboration with this as well as other books in process,
