Overview
Are you working on a non-fiction project? If you’re looking for an editor for a factual text – whether it’s memoir, biography, history, comic musings, instructional text, general non-fiction, art monograph or anything else – I’ll be very happy to discuss your work with you.
—> What can I do for you?
• Structural and development editing
• Copy editing
• Writing and rewriting
I can also help with research, converting text to British/Australian or American English, formatting text for designers, fact-checking, and managing endnotes and references in a range of formats.
Currently I’m not taking on proofreading jobs.
—> What kinds of subjects?
I’m especially interested in areas like music, comedy, literature, history, art, First Nations cultures and histories, birds and wildlife, psychology, popular science, food, education, the law, health, politics and current affairs.
I’ve worked on books by a wide range of authors including:
• Professor Kerryn Phelps, Australian doctor, activist and former federal politican
• Jeff Apter, music biographer
• Professor Richard Scolyer, 2024 Australian of the Year
• Katherine Wiles, Australian-NZ opera singer and memoirist
• Lucie Morris-Marr, Walkley Award–winning journalist
• Conor Woodman, UK TV presenter and true crime writer
• Melissa Doyle, TV presenter, and Naima Brown, TV producer and author
• Professor Clive Hamilton, public intellectual
• Professor Inger Mewburn, ‘The Thesis Whisperer’
• Dr Terri Janke, Indigenous (Wuthathi/Meriam) lawyer
• Rebecca Prince-Ruiz, Plastic Free July founder
• Alison Pouliot, photographer and ecologist
• John Smailes, motor-racing journalist.
—> How will I communicate?
Respectfully. When there is respect on both sides of an editor–author relationship, everyone gets the best results. I want to help writers craft or polish their text for the audience they have in mind, and for the purpose they intend it.
—> Other details
I’m a professional member of Australia’s Institute of Professional Editors Limited (IPEd). My fees are calculated in Australian dollars (AUD).
Before freelancing, I worked in legal publishing (Butterworth/LexisNexis Australia), then in educational publishing, working on books from preschool level through to tertiary textbooks.
I have a particular interest in anything to do with music or comedy, and I subedit and write regularly for the Australian print magazine Women In Pop.
