Overview

I’m an editor of non-fiction, with 20 years’ experience, and I love it.

Whether you have a memoir, a biography, a family history, a passion project on a subject you’re excited about, a how-to guide, an educational treatise, an art catalogue, an illustrated book or any other type of factual text, I’ll be happy to help.

—> What can I do for you?

• Structural and development editing
• Copy editing
• Writing and rewriting

I can also help with research, converting text to British/Australian or American English, formatting text for designers, permissions research, image research, and managing endnotes and references in a range of formats.

Currenty I’m limiting proofreading jobs to concentrate on editing.

—> What kinds of subjects?

I’m especially interested in areas like music, comedy, literature, history, art, First Nations cultures and histories, birds and wildlife, psychology, popular science, food, education, the law, health, politics and current affairs. Actually that’s kind of a long list, because I find most topics offer something appealing and informative, and as long as the text isn’t ethically dicey, I’ll be happy to dive right in.

I’ve worked on books by authors including:

• music biographer Jeff Apter

• award-winning podcast producer Siobhán McHugh

• public intellectual Professor Clive Hamilton AM

• ‘The Thesis Whisperer’ Professor Inger Mewburn

• eminent Indigenous (Wuthathi/Meriam) lawyer Dr Terri Janke

• Plastic Free July founder Rebecca Prince-Ruiz

• photographer and travel writer Anthony Ham

• motor-racing journalist John Smailes.

—> How will I communicate?

I’d like to outlaw all editorial questions and comments that read like barked instructions from a drill sergeant: Do this! Change this! WHAT DOES THIS MEAN?!

Instead, I know that respect on both sides of an editor–author relationship results in much, much better outcomes for any text. I never assume I could write any book better than its author – all I want to do is help writers craft or polish their text for the audience they have in mind, and for the purpose they intend it. That’s all.

—> Other details

I’m a professional member of Australia’s Institute of Professional Editors Limited (IPEd, iped-editors.org). My fees are calculated in Australian dollars (AUD).

Outside editing, I love music and birds and books and comedy and TV, and I play in a band, so if your book is about guitar-wielding pelicans who tell jokes and subscribe to too many streaming services, please do get in touch.
