Danielle Collins

Danielle Collins – Editor

Dedicated editor of various genres and age groups, including picture books, middle grade, YA, adult mysteries/thrillers, and biographies.

Overview

I'm an editor, copyeditor, and proofreader with experience working at trade, independent, and academic publishing houses. I currently work with picture books and middle grade novels on an editorial team at Simon & Schuster. Previously, at Sourcebooks, I worked with adult fiction titles ranging from psychological thrillers to historical fiction. At Yale University Press, I worked with biographies for the Jewish Lives series, as well as academic monographs in the subjects of religion, classics, and literature. I have also served as an editor for online platforms, including editing fiction and creative nonfiction pieces at a literary magazine and journalistic blog posts for a university blog.

As an editor, I'm here to make your writing the best it can be without compromising your voice or style. It's your work, after all! Working with everything from novels to picture books to monographs has given me the skills to edit on a line-by-line basis and give broader developmental edits. If you'd like feedback on your project as a whole, I can provide recommendations for plot, structure, and clarity. If you're looking to get into the nitty gritty details, I can copyedit and/or proofread manuscripts for grammar, syntax, and style. I'd love to be a part of your next project!

Work experience

Simon & Schuster

Nov, 2020 — Present

As the assistant to two children's imprints at Simon & Schuster, I work with picture books of various genres, as well as middle grade fiction.

Yale University Press

Jun, 2019 — Aug, 2019 (2 months)

I reviewed book proposals and queries, either sending rejections or passing the project along to the proper editor— in other words, I know what editors are looking for. I also wrote memos for editorial meetings, advocating for the acquisition of new titles with compelling summaries and persuasive data.

Sourcebooks Publishing

Jun, 2018 — Aug, 2018 (2 months)

I edited novels in a variety of genres, from thrillers to historical fiction, providing line edits and developmental feedback. I wrote appealing back cover copy, along with internal reading materials such as reading group guides and author Q&As. I reviewed book proposals, writing reader's reports for promising projects or sending rejections.

Trojans 360

Apr, 2018 — May, 2020 (about 2 years)

Trojans 360 is an informational blog for the University of Southern California. I copyedited blog posts, focusing on grammar, tone, and style to enhance the reader experience. I also wrote social media copy for blog posts to grow Trojans 360 readership, which doubled during my time as Editor In Chief.

Palaver Arts Magazine

Dec, 2016 — May, 2020 (over 3 years)

I edited short-form fiction and creative nonfiction pieces, providing developmental feedback and line edits. I reviewed submissions and selected pieces for publication.

Danielle was wonderful to work with. New to picture book writing, Danielle helped me with continuity issues and some plot points. Her editing recommendations helped the focus of the story and were all delivered ahead of schedule. I look forward to working with Danielle again on many more manuscripts.
