Christina Pulles

Christina Pulles – Editor

I'm a professional children's book editor with experience in trade, licensed, and educational publishing.

Overview

Hi, I'm Christina! I have more than 14 years of experience in the publishing industry, with a focus on children's editorial. I've worked as an editor at Simon & Schuster, Sterling Children's Books (now Union Square & Co.), and Albert Whitman & Company.

Middle grade fiction is where I feel most at home, but I've edited dozens of picture books and several YA novels as well. My edited works include Insignificant Events in the Life of a Cactus by Dusti Bowling, the Howard Wallace, P.I. series by Casey Lyall, Jayla Jumps In by Joy Jones, Queen of Physics: How Wu Chien Shiung Helped Unlock the Secrets of the Atom by Teresa Robeson, When Grandma Gives You a Lemon Tree by Jamie LB Deenihan, and A Song for Gwendolyn Brooks by Alice Faye Duncan.

A literary agent once told me I write the nicest rejection letters she's ever received, so I hope that's an indication that I'll be as gentle as I am honest in my feedback.

Work experience

Sterling Children's Books (now Union Square & Co.)

Jun, 2015 — Nov, 2018 (over 3 years)

At Sterling, I came to oversee the children's list of more than 85 titles per year, from board books to YA. I grew their middle grade list with acquisitions like Insignificant Events in the Life of a Cactus by Dusti Bowling, Howard Wallace, P.I. by Casey Lyall, and The Magic in Changing Your Stars by Leah Henderson.

American Reading Company

Mar, 2021 — Sep, 2023 (over 2 years)

At American Reading Company, an EdTech curriculum company, I conceptualized, edited, and published nonfiction and fiction books to be sold to schools as part of the ARC curriculum, in accordance with current literacy guidelines. I learned how to adapt my editorial skills to focus on how children learn to read.

Albert Whitman & Company

Dec, 2018 — Mar, 2021 (over 2 years)

I worked on picture books, chapter books, middle grade, and YA at Albert Whitman. Some of my published books include Jayla Jumps In by Joy Jones, The Exceptional Maggie Chowder by Renee Beauregard Lute, and More than Just a Game by Madison Moore.

Simon Spotlight, Simon & Schuster Children's Publishing

Sep, 2011 — Jun, 2015 (over 3 years)

In my time at S&S I wrote and edited licensed 8x8s, readers, novelty books, and chapter books for brands including Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood, OLIVIA, Peanuts, and How to Train Your Dragon. I also developed ideas for middle grade series concepts and worked with authors on plot and character development.

Independent Publishers Group

Nov, 2009 — Aug, 2011 (almost 2 years)

My time at IPG gave me insight into the sales side of the publishing business. I kept track of feedback my boss received from buyers and have used it throughout my career when thinking about how a book will sell.
