Caitlin Landuyt

Caitlin Landuyt – Editor

I'm an established literary fiction editor passionate about developing great stories who has worked at Big Five houses in the US and the UK.

Overview

I am a freelance fiction editor with experience working at big-five publishing houses in the US and the UK - Penguin Random House and Hachette, respectively - as well as with top global literary agencies. I am passionate about helping authors bring their vision to life and share that vision with readers. I specialize in literary fiction, but have quite eclectic taste, which means I read widely and am familiar with many sectors of the market, both professionally and in my personal reading.

I believe my job as an editor is three-fold: I must be my authors’ fiercest advocate, highlighting their successes on the page and communicating my enthusiasm; their most diligent reader, pointing out areas that don’t seem to fit with the rest of the text, moments when characters act outside of how they’ve been presented, transitions that pull readers out of the narrative, etc.; and their public relations manager, making sure I’m positioning their book in a way that reflects their vision for the title and for their career trajectory. My editorial style adapts to each author, as I believe I get the best results by meeting authors where they are most comfortable.

I am available for editorial assessments, developmental edits, line edits, submission package assessments and query letter reviews. My experience in-house means I am also comfortable pitching books, writing cover copy and workshopping titles and subtitles, and can provide those services as well. I'd love to hear from you so we can discuss your goals and how we can achieve them together.

As soon as you start working with Caitlin, you’ll know you’re in good hands. Her insightful editing – not least her sense of pacing and structure – brought movement and flow to my story, strengthened the weak spots and heightened the strong ones even more. We also checked in via video calls, none...
