Angelica Sgouros

Angelica Sgouros – Editor

Freelance editor and proofreader with an indie publishing background, specializing in feminist and queer politics and literature.

Overview

I'm an experienced editorial freelancer coming from a background as an in-house editorial and production editor in independent, small press publishing. My areas of expertise are feminist and queer/LGBTQ fiction and nonfiction, race, cultural theory, art, philosophy, translation, politics and activism.

Since going freelance, I have worked with academic and trade publishers of all sizes; with journals, magazines and nonprofit organizations; on grant writing for literary funding; with film festivals and art institutions; and directly with independent authors on articles and manuscripts, both fiction and nonfiction.

I have been at times a grassroots organizer, bookseller, copywriter, and publishing jack-of-all-trades. I am also a research MA student in Cultural Analysis at the Amsterdam School for Cultural Analysis (ASCA) at the University of Amsterdam, as well as an editor-at-large at Barricade, a journal of literary translation and antifascist politics. I am additionally fluent in Greek, and my work travels with me, as I am variably based out of rural Maine, Amsterdam, or Athens, for months at a time.

Work experience

Verso Books

Apr, 2013 — May, 2016 (about 3 years)
Oversaw editorial production on 75+ titles a year, maintaining high editorial standards of copyediting and proofreading before signing them off to print. Titles were primarily trade and academic nonfiction but also included translated fiction. I specialized in social and cultural politics and activism, but in particular on race, gender and queer politics and theory. Acquired multiple feminist titles and assisted in editorial decision making.

The Feminist Press

Aug, 2010 — Apr, 2013 (over 2 years)
Performed structural edits as well as proofreads and copyedits on 8-10 books a year of queer and feminist literature or feminist/queer-oriented trade nonfiction and translated fiction. Participated in acquisitions and editorial decision making.
