Overview
I aim to help you find the voice, the beating heart, of your own story through insightful, constructive and collaborative feedback at every step. I can provide the support you need, with clear structure and guidance, timeliness, and open communication.
As a commissioning editor for a mid-size SFF publisher, I work with authors in trade publishing from all over the world, across a wide array of subgenres (including but not limited to epic fantasy, historical fantasy, dark fantasy, space fantasy, space opera, folk fantasy and horror, gothic horror, magical realism, literary & speculative). I specialise in stories that explore social issues, gender and identity, marginalisation and belonging. This has taken the form of stories with non-human characters grappling with what it means to be human, albeit monsters, robots, spirits; complex, multilayered storytelling; historical fantasy, including non Western worlds and contexts; small scale SF in a richly built world; queer narratives; and narratives imagining possible change & collective resistance. I look forward to working with indie authors and authors starting out on their road to traditional publishing.
My road to SFF publishing was paved by the slush piles of playscripts for theatre companies, the book reviews and culture essays for Ms. Magazine, the theatre reviews and my theatre PhD that have all shaped how I engage with writing, and the artists behind them. Not to mention, of course, a childhood of Philip Pullman, Cornelia Funke, Garth Nix, Eoin Colfer and Terry Pratchett.
