Alice Solomons

Alice Solomons – Editor

As a publishing director I specialise in non-fiction titles, nurturing and perfecting books from manuscript to publication.

Overview

I've worked with writers for eleven years on all aspects of book production, especially editing non-fiction titles. I specialise in self-help, mental well-being, parenting and inspirational books.

I can provide detailed editorial feedback for your non-fiction project or a more general overview. I can also provide regular support and coaching if you have a brilliant idea for your book but need someone to guide you through the writing process. I love working with all authors and can provide sensitive, useful edits.

I also work for a small, independent fiction publisher of historical and speculative fiction which I co-founded. I've seen a lot of submissions and can provide editorial feedback for fiction titles.

Work experience

Small, independent publisher

Sep, 2020 — Present
I co-founded this small, independent publisher of fiction. We publish unagented writers and go through a very large number of submissions, I can provide useful feedback on fiction submissions and full manuscripts. So far, we have published four titles. In 2024, one of our books was nominated for a LAMMY award. The others have enjoyed positive reviews across the web, including Amazon and Goodreads.

Free Association Books (incorporating Ortus Press)

Jan, 2014 — Present
Free Association Books is an established non-fiction publishing house based in London. We publish books on self-help, social work, history, health-studies, public policy, psychotherapy, social sciences and more. As Director of Publishing I oversee and manage the whole process from manuscript selection to publication. Most of my time is spent perfecting and polishing manuscripts which includes the whole spectrum of editing, from a developmental edit where I look at overall structure to a detailed copy-edit where I look at the document line by line. In 2015, I set up a new imprint called Ortus Press which focuses on accessible titles, written by experts, for the self-help, popular psychology and mental health market.

Alice produced detailed editorial advice which more than met my needs. I appreciated the care she took to read my text and suggest ways it could be improved. I will have Alice to thank if any readers of my text report they found it an easy read even though a difficult subject.

How do publishing companies typically incorporate sensitivity readers into the editorial process?

Sometimes a character or situation needs specialist input. For instance, I once worked on a fiction title with a Deaf character. We employed a Deaf sensitivity reader to offer their opinion on how realistic/believable the writing was. It can also be useful to make sure the writing doesn't cause o...

What should I do if someone has already written a book with my idea?

Write it anyway!

The market for books is huge and each writer's voice is unique. You will have a different way of presenting the informaiton or telling the story, even if it's similar to someone else's.

How do you decide which projects to take on?

I always choose projects that are aligned with my editorial experience. It's very important that I feel I can provide a good service for authors and to give them useful and constructive feedback, so sometimes, even though I'm really exicted about a book, I know it's not the right fit for me and I...
